I have done this a couple of times and each time the game just quits and I am in GOG Galaxy. This happens after Bent and Fay are talking at the table in the cabin in the beginning of the game. Obviously, I can't proceed further. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Try reinstalling the game with the offline installer then run the game that way. ( Not using Galaxy )

try windowed mode, worked for me
