Near the end of the game, the last time you go to merrick's house, if you immediately leave instead of going in, the only place on the map you can go to is the hotel, where things are still as they were at the end of the last chapter, with no way to progress.

Thankfully I had a save vaguely near so it didn't set me back to far.
