I think this game is awesome. Played it on Switch already and wanted to experience the game with higher framerate and better graphics. People say this port is bad but it works fine I gues. If u have more than one HID-Device connected the game maybe won't register imputs from your conroller. HIDHide is the software that resolves this problem.
If you're looking at this you probably know Ys, and this is just the expected progressing of the modern Ys titles, a good story and an improved battle system that's definitely worth picking up and playing through..
It's sad to see the horrible score for this game as it's a really great title that was released seven months late in an absolutely atrocious state. If it weren't for me being a massive Falcom fan I would've refunded this when it was delayed, or when it released as a broken crashy mess, but I stuck it out for as long as I could hoping that they'd fix it.
I'm happy to say that they have, barring a few bugs they're still actually working on, and as of the GOG-3 release everything from the constant crashing to the flickering in certain areas bad enough to make your eyes bleed and make you worry about it trigger a seizure is no longer an issue.
That being said, after waiting more than half a year only to receive a game that I couldn't play for over a week until it had been patched multiple times, I just can't give the PC release five stars even though the console version gets it without question or hesitation. This was an Arkham Knight bad launch, though we didn't get a price reduction to make up for it, or even beta access for pre-orders. If they had given us (my $60 was laid down in September of 2017 but I couldn't play until May of 2018) a partial refund, dropped the price by a third to match Vita pricing rather than PS4 pricing, then I would be more forgiving of the long wait and completely broken state of the game at launch.
Also, for those of you who care about this kind of thing: There are no achievements via Galaxy like there are for PSN and Steam, and despite the fact that I'm pretty dismissive of those things in general I do hate to see a lack of feature parity (even for ones I never use) on GOG releases.
I really wanted to love this one, but I can really only like it. It's a great island adventure with tons of exploration, and a base of operations filled with people I really grew to care about, especially the titular Dana, who is warm and caring and just adorably weird. The action was excellent (once you figure out how to map the buttons in a sane way) with perfect guarding/dodging to spice things up, and skills no longer take an eternity to master. The plot is balls-to-the-wall crazy, but I think that fits a series that's always been less about story and more about running around, exploding strange monsters with a sword while electric guitars squeal in the background. Speaking of which, this is one of the best soundtracks the series has had in a long time; it does a better job of treading the line of hard rock and coke-fueled J-rock from the most intense anime ever.
Unfortunately, it's at least 40 hours longer than it needs to be. You have constant raids on your village, and they are ALWAYS right in the middle of a dungeon; they're scripted, so ANY other time could've been chosen for them to happen. They're a bit like tower defense, but you actually control your characters, and they aren't all that bad, but they're really unnecessary and badly placed. On top of that, you have hunts, which are similar, and night missions, where you get thrown into a different version of an existing dungeon, but with half a dozen miniboss-level baddies chasing you at any given time. The game has some pretty bad pacing issues in the second half, too; I was almost always under the recommended level, sometimes significantly, and I'm not one to run away from fights. At the very least, I didn't have to do absolutely everything to get the best ending, even if that ending did make me want to punch something.
Overall, I'm glad to have experienced this game, but it could REALLY use an editor grind down the excess content and meandering plot.
