New era
I got this game so much time after its initial release mostly because I heard it had tons of optimization problems which slowly got fixed. On PS4 the game now runs perfectly without problems. Ys 8 breaks nearily all the standards the series had. To start with this is the first Ys to have a story of equal worth with the more famous RPGs in terms of telling. There is story no matter where you go and everything is interconnected even if not immediately. The characters have place in the plot, their actions means new elements to the story with the sole exceptions of Nia who's a bit out of place. The gameplay is just awesome. Large maps with a lot of freedom in movement, well placed enemies and object without feeling any place empty or stuffed. The fighting is similar to that of in Memories of Celceta but with less abusable flash guard and evade. Skills are pretty generic and maybe some are less generally usable as other but overall you're free to pick the one you like the most without worrying too much about effectiveness. Exploring is fun, there is so much diversity even on the same map. There is however minimal indication how can you reach certain places sometimes feeling like just a bug (especially jump puzzles where you miss only a pixel or two, not knowing you actually need double jump later). This is like this in the new Ys games though so I don't complain. For closing let me return to the story for a bit. I really enjoyed it. I found the emotional and moral handing exceptional. There is no forced sad moments nor questions about good and evil relations. The game let you experience the passing in such an art-like environment it feel natural. Not crying after the deaths but instead feel like having an era completed filled with precious memories, having an important legacy. The character of Dana had a large impact on me. I dare to say she is the best character the series ever had, one of the best a game ever featured. Bested Ys Seven's ending if you ask me.

A great ride
While a relatively modest and old game, Lacrimosa of Dana built up into a classic of mine that I will forever remember fondly. While it starts off rough, with an opening scene reminding me of bland PS2 games and an eyeroll inducing anime moment when recruiting Laxia, the fun action fights and great soundtrack kept me playing until the story picked up. The story is truly the stellar aspect of this game. Unraveling the mystery of the island is thrilling, and the characters are fun and interesting. The game is about Dana, and rightfully so. She is fun, and you get attached to her pretty strongly, leading to an ending that I still cry over a bit. The camp and people you meet there also grow with you, a big family-by-circumstances. This final version of the game, with all the DLC and adds, is really well paced. You have many ways of acquiring items, either by gathering, or fighting in diverse special game modes that break up the pace and renews your interest. A certain dungeon, I later learned was added DLC, and yet the story it provides and how it expands the lore of the mystery of Seiren clicks into place like it was always meant to be there. It is not a polished, triple A modern game, but if you like action RPGs and good stories, I'd wager you will like this one. It has been circulating among our friends and family, as we fall in love with it one by one and convince them to try it out. I played the Switch version, so I can't comment on how stable the PC version is, but it's certainly a bit prettier and more fluid than I experienced.

Great Game So Far
I've only put in about 2 hours. Game play is fun and rewarding. Definitely feels and plays like a PSP game (it's from that era). Not a bad thing. Nostalgic for me. Absolutely a run of the mill JRPG, so if you're not into JRPGs this is NOT the game for you.

Same old JRPG elements fitting perfectly
This is the first Ys game that I play, but I can say that it is worth a try even if you are not so much in this kind of games. Even if there's nothing new in plot and in characters, it all fits well. We have classic jrpg characters (the brave protagonist, the silly little girl, the funny big man, the tsundere, etc...) but they're all well characterized and it's funny to interact with them when you can. One or two moving moments with them are a pleasant adding. It's interesting how the story develops: first you can think it's a story about castaways trying to escape from a little island, but from half of the game it becomes more epic; the Dana of the title become central and this island become little by little the real centre of the world. Nothing new, as already said, but the way all narrations are connected is intriguing and help to maintain the attention high. The gameplay is always funny; fast pace battles and a good system of skills. A little grinding if you want to create all items and powerups, but is never oppressive. Two words on the ending: I found the idea of the ending very good - what you think is right to do maybe it's not really the right thing to do... BUT. I had the impression that the screenplay rushes over the parts that needed more time and explanation (like Dana decision after the "first final boss", and all stuff related to the error of evaluation of the consequences) and lengthens too much the moments you feel a need to close everything (ie: I found the very last boss useless... why put it there? It breaks the immersion of the ending with a thing that has no real use in the plot). So: not perfect, but a game in which you can invest from 20 to more or less 100 hours; thought for a lot of types of gameplay.
