Ys Origin

I have to say my first time playing a "modern" style Ys game has left a pretty damn good impression. Fast, fun, and action packed, I enjoyed the hell out of this game and if you are a fan of action adventure games, I can easily say check this one out. Just go understanding this is a linear game that cuts to just the moment to moment combat game and plays this exceptionally well instead of actually wandering around an open world. Also do not go in expecting to get anything out of the "replay" with the other character, because it's basically not there. What is here is great, just a bit more limited in scope then other games even in this series (that I have played so far).

With fast paced action and rpg elements Ys origin is a great add to any collection. I was expecting the arpg -like combat style, but uit really grew on me and the story is solid, if a little uninspired. Definitely recommend this.

YS Origin is my first YS game ever, so I can't compare it with other titles in the series. This game has great story, corny at times, but overall good english text, fitting graphics and atmosphere, and solid gameplay. Players of explorative type will love YS Origin, as it's filled to the brim with helpful items do discover and use through the quest. Levels are cleverly designed and sometimes provide decent platforming challenge, especially in mid-to-final levels. Boss battles are long, challenging and really force you to get good in order to beat them. Controls are not only fluid, but remappable as well, which is definitely a plus in my book, although I highly recommend using a game controller. Music score is epic and well composed, you can't go wrong purchasing this soundtrack for your listening pleasure. Some of the complaints I have are need to grind levels in order stand any chance against bosses, strange damage calculation formula (I look at you, 1 damage), depth perception problems caused by use of 2D sprites on 3D plane and pacing of the game, due to how boring it can at times get. Also, achievements at the time of this review are patched out, and did not work before. With great story, outstanding sound and graphics and superb controls this game is a must-have for fans of exploration action games. Be sure to get it and experience it for yourself, you'll not be disappointed.

I have GOG galaxy set to English. But when I installed this game, the text is in Japanese in may places and the voice acting was French. There is no instruction on how to change the languages either. I used GOG galaxy to install. Then uninstalled and downloaded the offline files and installed again, choosing English at the language. Still majority of text in game is still Japanese. I have searched Google and asked AI to no avail. GOG galaxy says the language is in English but the settings app is entirely Japanese with no apparent way to change it. I am very disappointed in this game and am asking for a refund. It is unplayable unless you can read Japanese.

I want to enjoy this game. It looks like everything that I want to get from a JRPG. Yet, the cut scenes, OMG the cut scenes are a PITA. They are long, annoying and cause my most modern laptop with a dedicated graphics card to crash like a lead zepplien. I am sorry, but this is a major faux pas in my book now a days for any game. If it crashes and I have to suffer through the 5-6 minute cut scenes including the intro video over and over and over again without an option to hit a button to skip. Well sorry, but you don't be installed on my computer again. Even worse though is that I heard plenty of good things about the whole series and this one game makes me leary of trying it out even one. Oh and localization, all the voices overs for me are in French???? The on screen text is in English, but is it really localized if the voices are one language and the written text is another. Last complaint is about trying to get my controls to work. It seems that the game doesn't like any of my mice. From a nice old wired version to the bluetooth enabled one. So trying to figure out the controls on a fly with no options in the game to change them says that this is not a game worth my time and I am sorry I spent money on it.
