Yooka and Laylee return for a platform hybrid adventure
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is a brand-new platform adventure from some of the key creative talent behind 'Donkey Kong Country'. With their arch-nemesis Capital B up to no good, the buddy duo needs to spring into action once again to save the day. To thwart his evil plan of using a “Hivemind” device to enslave an entire kingdom of bees, our heroes need to take the fight to Capital B’s “Impossible” Lair. Things look tough, but with the help of Queen Phoebee and her Royal Beetallion, Yooka and Laylee might just have a chance!
2.5D Platforming! Each level offers beautiful, rich visuals with detail and depth. Yooka, Laylee and a whole host of colourful characters (good and bad) are realised in stunning 2.5D
3D Overworld! The overworld isn’t just a hub to hop from level to level, it provides a whole separate gaming experience! Explore and unlock more 2D levels by completing objectives and puzzles, rescue the Royal Beetallion bees and find collectibles.
Alternate Level States! Think you’ve got a level figured out? Try it in its alternate state! Flip switches in the overworld to create new landscapes. Hook up electricity, submerge them in water, freeze or literally flip them upside down for radically altered challenges!
Bee-at the Impossible Lair! Players are free to tackle Capital B’s Impossible Lair at any time; however, they may find it too much of a challenge without the help of the Royal Beetallion. Free them by completing levels and they will add to your defences when taking on Capital B’s dastardly traps!
Was already a fan of the original game, but this game's different direction makes it varied and interesting. If you're a fan of DKC, or older Rare platformers, then this is your best bet outside of Nintendo.
It has great energy, great levels, great music, and a whooper of a challenge at the end.
Bright cute and lots of fun, Yuka Laylee takes a mixture of old school and modern platformer elements like Donkey Kong Countries barrell roll move the helicopter spin of the Rayman games as well as some notes from other greats like Super Mario Bros and so on and splices it all into a uniquely satifying blend of story/action and humor.
It's ananimation art form game, which is clearly lovingly made, it's filled with a fast paced action with an adventure theme and story kind of like playing an animated movie in a game of sorts, the cut scenes could do with a little less written context but irrespectively you just have to applaud the attention to detail here and the time it must have taken to craft this game, and it's dfefinitely paid off.
What you get is an elite AAA quality game for a lot less cost that plays smooth as butter providing a fully engaging console experience on PC albeit with a slightly different feel to a lot of the mainstream games, although it doesn't stand to far a field from those either,. It's certainly a little different from the others, keeping things challenging whilst managing to remain compatible for any person of any age to be able to play it and enjoy it.
The game is good for the few missions, but after a while you gonna notice that there is no variety on the gameplay. No bosses, very, very few gimmick stages, no new moves to unlock, and no secrets that aren't the coins. The coins also have a poor design for the one and only collectable. The tonic system while interesting in concept, it wasn't well implemented. The quills they multiply are an infinite collectable, that you can just go and do a stage again to get more, so there's nothing unique.
Despite being based on a great game, they only imported one of the things that made it great. As such this game should be a lot shorter, because it really overstays its welcome.
Just play Rayman for example, much cleaner movement, especially under water. Unreachable spots that you gotta revisit later are very unclear and just make you try with no success for an unnecessary amount of time. Frustrating mechanics when you get hit... bland overworld... only giving it 2 stars because the idea of having a modified level is kinda cool.
