Great game, great music. Shame they didn't continue it as a series but you can reed rest of the story in comics.
Only thing bad is problem with mouse. It will be unplayeble. But to fix that you need to go to options, turn mouse sensitivity bar max to the right and press enter to save it. Just don't right click out of menu since it won't save it like that. And turn down your mouse sensitivity to min (mine has little button on it to control dpi). It will be still wonky in menu but in game it will be fine.
Have fun.
XIII is an almost fantastic game. With the art direction being stylized, it still looks great. It's not as good as Borderlands, but still great. Cell shading does a lot to hide the age of the game. This along with good cut scenes made me feel like I was playing a comic, and it does all this on fairly low end cards. The story was above average (it actually had one), and there is actual depth on the various principle characters in the game. The voice acting was on the better end of video games.
If it weren't for three sins and one flaw, it could easily have earned 5 stars.
1. Check points: This is an outdated concept that was obsolete years before XIII was published. Outside of a few genuine games where they actually enhance, it is a lazy game development tool. Life interrupts, and sometimes people can't take the time to make the next check point, and their game play was wasted.
2. Long times between check points and sudden death: I guess this could be two, but the combo is what makes it bad. I had sections of the game that would take up to 20 minutes (your mileage may vary) to reach the next check point, and a single failure during that time would result in complete failure and replaying the entire section.
3. Difficulty: I decided to play the game on Arcade mode (easy in other games) to just enjoy the story, and I had more trouble playing than I did F.E.A.R. on its hardest difficulty. I'm not saying it can't be done, it can, but Arcade (easy) should actually be easy.
The one flaw was that bosses didn't feel balanced. Some were so easy I didn't even need a health pack, while others were so hard I had to replay the section several times.
All in all, it was a fun time, and I'm glad I got it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who would love to play an action spy game with plenty of shooting and sneaking. I would have been happy to have gotten it for $15-20. At GOGs price... It's a steal.
This game is still great! the story and atmosphere make it one of the more unique FPS games I can thin of. The controls and game play are very much a throw back to the Goldeneye era of shooters. The game itself has aged quite well, and i'm loving it as much as I did when I played it for XBox years and years ago.
I knocked an entire star off for two reasons though: one, supported resolutions have not been updated. which compared to item 2 is more of an annoyance than a big issue. 2: mouse control on the menu screens is an abomination. like... I dont even know how you could have mouse support this bad. The cursor doesn't go anywhere you want it to, and actually wont even traverse the entire screen. That said, the menus are navigable with the keyboard, and the mouse support in game is good. Poor form though Ubisoft. tisk tisk. You should cnsider yourself lucky that the rest of the game makes up for this.
For $6, it's a MUST BUY
STORY:
In general, the story is quite interesting, actually with some polishing it might be good enough for a Hollywood blockbuster! Must admit though, sometimes it feels a little bit cheap, like it can be improved in some way and needs to put more deeper thoughts in it. I wish it was made closer to the XIII comic book series, on which it’s based but very loosely. And XIII comics are just great IMO!!!
VISUAL STYLE:
Cartoonish visual style of this game, which imitates a comic book, is very appealing to me and is the reason why this game has drawn my attention in the first place. It compliments the story well and creates a really unique atmosphere. And thanks to this style, the game looks decent even today, despite its age and not very advanced graphic.
CONTROL:
Clumsy control is a common problem for many vintage games, but this game really hates modern mouses. No matter how low Mouse Sensitivity in settings is, a camera jumps all over the place like crazy.
