Description
XCOM 2 is the sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the 2012 award-winning strategy game of the year.

Earth has changed. Twenty years have passed since world leaders offered an unconditional surrender to alien forces. XCOM, the planet’s last line of defense, was left decimated and scattered. Now, in XCOM 2, the aliens rule Earth, building shining cities that promise a brilliant future for humanity on the surface, while concealing a sinister agenda and eliminating all who dissent from their new order.

Only those who live at the edges of the world have a margin of freedom. Here, a force gathers once again to stand up for humanity. Always on the run, and facing impossible odds, the remnant XCOM forces must find a way to ignite a global resistance, and eliminate the alien threat once and for all.

  • XCOM ON THE RUN: Take command of the Avenger, an alien supply craft converted to XCOM’s mobile headquarters. New open-ended gameplay lets you decide where to guide your strike team, how to grow popular support, and when to combat enemy counter-operations.
  • RECRUIT RESISTANCE FIGHTERS: Five soldier classes, each with its own skill tree, let you create specific soldiers for your tactical plan.
  • TACTICAL GUERRILLA COMBAT: New gameplay systems offer more tactical flexibility in combat. Use concealment to ambush enemy patrols. Loot enemies for precious gear and artifacts. Rescue VIPs and save fallen comrades by carrying them to the extraction point.
  • A NEW BREED OF ENEMY: A diverse cast of enemies from powerful new alien species to the ADVENT, enforcers of the alien regime, offer a distinct tactical challenge.
  • RESEARCH, DEVELOP AND UPGRADE: Configure and build rooms on the Avenger to give XCOM new capabilities on the battlefield. Use your Scientists and Engineers to research, develop and upgrade weapons and armor to fit your preferred tactics.
  • EACH MISSION IS A UNIQUE CHALLENGE: Go on missions around the world, from wildlands to the heart of the alien-controlled megacities, to the depths of alien installations. There are virtually infinite combinations of maps, missions and goals.

Too many bugs

This game runs horribly on AMD video cards. Doesn't use the video hardware AT ALL. To reduce the crash frequency, you have to reduce the resolution to less than 1400x900. The scripted events rarely trigger when the are supposed too. You are forced to 'start a new game' in an attempt to work-around non-firing/non-triggering events. The game constantly stutters/freezes as it searches for non-existent files. If you don't get the install order correct, none of the DLC packs are found by the game. War of the Chosen problems : The 'Bink Video' nag-ware is really annoying. Forced to endure every mission briefing at least twice. If you don't do the Legacy missions first, the 'rescue the resistance from ADVENT retaliation' missions frequently crash. Your troops are always tired. Ability Points are so rare, the faction troops are not worth the trouble.

Excellent Game - Missing Feature

XCOM2 is one of the best game of it's kind, with it's cleaver AI, soldiers customization both visually and mechanically, logical and practical tactical approach to the challenges without turning them into fixed puzzles, and of course an interesting story concept that can keep the player interested and push him/her to achieve success with limited resource and personnel; A very well done simulation of "guerrilla warfare with aliens", with flying mobile base included, that despite some minor flaws is actually pretty fair and never boring. Unfortunately as of now 18/3/2020, is strongly recommended TO NOT BUY the game here on GOG, as it doesn't support mods nor the official SDK necessary to mod the game is available here. Mods being one of XCOM2 most important feature, an absolutely essential tool to dramatically improve and customize the game to the player choice by removing or altering any option to perfection, be it by challenge or simple items; the lack of this feature pretty much kill the game longevity and value, making the GOG variant plain out inferior to it's Steam competitor, worse there is no mention of it in the game main page, tricking the customer into believing this game feature complete while it's obviously not. Until this tremendous problem is fixed on GOG, it's impossible to give to give this game anything more then a 2 stars, despite the Steam version easily deserving a 5.

Only if you can overcome the pain.

I'd totally understand if this was an old game breaking into a new unexplored genre with foundations not yet established. But this is a 2016 game and the turn-based combat genre was nothing new back then. It was already very well established. XCOM misses the mark on almost every aspect that makes turn-based combat work. 1) Clarity. The maps in this game are a complete visual mess. It's like the graphical team never spoke a word to the map design team and vice-versa. There is so much clutter everywhere you can barely make out what the map has to offer in terms of tactics. Clarity should have been the priority. 2) AutoCAD-like UI design. Navigating through different layers of the map is nothing short of unpleasant. Why not give the player the ability to select which layer of the map he wishes to see at a certain moment? The simple act of looking for windows in a building is a chore. Everything gets in the way of you having a clear picture of what is going on. 3) Make it quick and painless. The enemy turns take so long to complete and they have this weird way of playing out in which the enemy moves from A to B and then after it stops it takes its time, thinks about life, and only then it attacks. One should follow the other quickly without wasting your time. 4) What you see isn't what you get. What is actually going on in a particular scenario should at some point override whatever background calculations the game is doing in order to come up with numbers that will determine the outcome of your actions. A lot of times there is a clear disconnect between what is actually happening and what the game thinks is happening. I'm on one side of a barrel and the enemy is on the other. The game should account for situations like that and give both parts a 100% shot, cover be damned. Instead the game puts you constantly in probability scenarios that should belong in a Naked Gun movie. The same disconnect happens with line of sight as well. The alien designs are terrible. The end.

Hiden featires

Once again there is no mention of time limit in this game on the main page. If you want to experience slow stategic gameplay - forget about it. This game is all about "tension" (aka masochism) - you have LIMITED time to finish your missions, which forces you to hurry, to engage enemies head-on, leaving no place for subtle approach. Some people love it this way, some hate it this way. Make your choice of buying this XCOM wisely.

Windows10 & 11:Game crashes on startup

Installer is incomplete. On a fresh System there is a high chance that you will run into the missing Visual C++ Redistributables error. (Downloadable@Microsoft) Even after adding the missing redistributables the game just won't start at all (it actually crashes silently...) Checking Windows event logs for application errors shows that "XCOM 2\Binaries\Win64\common.dll" reproducibly crashes with exception 0xc0000409. Some people @forum could get it to run using GOG-Galaxy. Released in 2016 and in 2023 they still have not got their installer straight... For me this was the last time i wasted money on "Firaxis Games / 2K Games"
