X Rebirth: Home of Light Complete Edition

I have owned the X series so many times I can't even recount anymore, DVD's, Steam, GoG etc.. This particular title XRebirth deserves a new perspective, seeing as no up to date ratings exist. Rather than talk about stars lets talk about technology, under the hood X:R had allot of promise going for it. Two of the major problems that killed it at release. First it didn't live up to the previous titles as it was heavily watered down and two steps backwards. Second it was released in a crippled state, given those merits however Egosoft are known for their track record when it comes to long term game support. X:R did get the needed leg up many years and updates later but it still didn't live up to die hard fans. So why would anyone consider getting this in 2017/2018? Because of X4 Foundations! Egosoft is finally living up to what made the X series great. Do anything and pilot anything, it will build off the X:R engine so if you can't wait to see what X4 will be like pick up X:R now consider it the cut down demo/sneak peak for their next iteration.

A major improvement. I'm not gonna say much but I just want other consumers to know this a solid purchase and easily worth the full retail price. Gotta go play now.

I love the X universe and was hoping that this would be one more game in a great well-crafted series. Why they chose to go off-course with this game, I'll never know. Unfortunately, it's more than just a game that has gone 'off-course'. It is a game that is frustrating and counter-intuitive. And, it breaks the number one rule for a game: Don't make the player mad at you. And yes, you will get really mad at the developers of this game. You might get over it. You might not.

If you are an X series fan, chances are you won't like this installment. If you're new, avoid it at all cost. The devs hoped to attract newcomers to the series and easier to get into by making X Rebirth more shooter-oriented with lighter emphasis on its trading/econ roots. However, that doesn't work out here, for it is still too complex a game for the lighthearted shooter fans. The bottom line is, if you are an X series vet, you better stick with X3; if you're a newcomer wanting to get into this renowned series, stick with X3; if you're looking more for an great story and extraordinary shooter, treat yourself to Freespace 2 (and its modern-day graphics mod) from the list on the right.

People who bought this game when it first came out are overjoyed because the game is now playable. People who didn't buy this game when it first came out should avoid it because it's still a pile of good ideas assembled together buy a three years old using his boogers. First the game still manages to not be amazeballs of running well after years of getting fixed. Then some of the quests are broken. Then the interface is from the 90s, if the 90s were like the 80s. You get the point. Unless you're willing to spend hours fiddling to make it work, skip.
