I have played this game multiple times and had great fun. As for difficulty it can be hard if you make mistakes early but I have won the game with a party where I picked the worst profession for each of the races. I have also won with a party of 6 Dracon Valkyries. Google Flamestryke for help great web page.
Having played Wizardry 8 and completed it, I found that this game has just an incredible amount of depth to it. There is just such high replay value as well. You can play any number of combinations with your group. Gog must have sacrificed some virgins to get this devilishly good game. I rank this up there with Baldur's Gate in terms of depth and replay. If your new to gaming or used to modern graphics, seriously give this a try and don't be put off. I can tell you this, the game will sink its teeth into you.. and not let go. Great experience
I still have a hard copy of this game and I cannot tell you how many times I've played it. It is fun from the moment you begin selecting your party, as the depth of character revealed by the selection process means you can tailor the game for a very humorous ride. This is a game where a well balanced party is needed.
The characters you meet along the way, the structure of the quests are well thought out/constructed and fun.
Yes, some of the battles can be long and hard, but the trick is not to go to an area that steps the game up a gear until you are ready. Then the battles remain challenging and, when you need to revisit areas, the re-spawning of critters isn't too time consuming. If you are in a battle that is too hard, you can choose to run away, plus, eventually there are points you can teleport to and from. So there is perhaps more choice in this department than some others have indicated.
The spell casting in this is just super - it is a very visual affair and the system and range of spells is effective.
It's also worth commenting on the weapons and armour that can be created. Gathering the components can be quite a challenge, but the items are well worth the effort.
Then there are the dungeons that hark back to earlier Wizardry games and require grid paper to chart your progress around. Then there are the Easter Eggs.....
This was a stunning end to the Wizardry series and Ray Bradbury's. Stop reading and just buy it! :D
Wizardry 8 comes as the last game of the Wizardry series. Because of the financial situation of SIR-TECH at the time, Wizardry 8 almost never saw the light of day - but the programmers got together, pitched in their own coin - and pushed Wizardry 8 through the door. They continued to work on patching the game, even as SIR-TECH was closing down their doors. Wizardry 8 is a great game (sometimes difficult; but which Wizardry game wasn't?). It even gained the interest of my wife, who managed to beat the game before I did, despite the fact I had started it two weeks before her. I would highly recommend this game; even now, dated as it may be.
Switch it to turn based (not continious) to give yourself a little thinking time and this RPG is very fun. Perks vs older Wizardry games: Has maps! Unique formations giving all ranged, all melee, and mixed groups ways of fighting that keeps the heat off those you want protected and keeps the heat on those you want taking your damage.
Yes the game is difficult at first, but compared to the other Wizardry games, this one seems like the easiest learning curve. Start with Wizardry 8 to get a feel for the system, and move backwards to more immersive/difficult titles like Wizardry 6/7.
