WHAT'S INSIDE THIS RELEASE

You're getting two builds per each game: patched (Enhanced) and retail (Original) for those of you who prefer an unaltered experience as a bonus. All builds are running on DOSBox with a custom configuration tool. The Enhanced builds feature fixes introduced in EGwhaven, a must-have community project, which addresses an array of bugs and issues with the both games (we'd like to thank ETTiNGRiNDER for the contribution to this release). Additionally, the controls are re-mapped to what you'd expect to see as a default in a first-person game nowadays.

You can access the Original Build through Additional Executables section in GOG GALAXY or find it in the game folder.

System requirements, bonus goodies, and features may vary between games - please check individual product pages for details.

Not perfect, but some great games!

These are some of the better of the "weaker" Build Engine games. Don't let their reputation fool you - Witchaven 1 while janky, is still great fun, highly atmospheric, and a blast to play. One of the biggest issues was that the game's jumping physics are tied to the framerate, so of course this caused issues on many people's PCs and made it unplayable in some moments due to constant deaths from the horrible jumping. Luckily this GOG release uses a patched build and that's been fixed! It also has proper modernized controls. Though I personally use low mouse sensitivity so that might be something you'll have to adjust. And I prefer the SoundBlaster music so I had to change that in the settings. The game itself is a simple 90s FPS but instead of using guns, there's a focus on medieval swords and whatnot. This game's art style is something nightmares are made of (and I mean that in the best way possible.) Even though it's on an island, every level is drenched in hellish atmosphere and it's just awesome. Now Witchaven 2 is much more of a buggy mess and most of the time playing it dosbox is kind of a nightmare. Thankfully this version is patched as well and it functions as it was intended to back in the day, so that's a plus as well. The jumping still kinda sucks but I guess that's just how it was programmed. This game has some awesome music that surpasses the original and some cool new weapons, but gone is the insanely dark atmosphere and I found the level design a bit more boring. Still, if you like 90s FPS games with some melee combat, this one is worth checking out. All in all I say this is yet another GOG release done right. If you liked these games back in the day or anytime after, this is a no brainer to pick up! Though it is quite expensive considering its age and obscurity, and it's still not 100% perfect. But as someone who grew up with Witchaven 1 and still loves it to gory medieval pieces, It's a great release in my book. Grab it fellow Build fanatics!

Recommended for the oldschool FPS fans

I have never heard of this game before. All I can say is that I am now a fan. I love old school FPS. The game runs flawlessly on a Windows 10 laptop. The game has some good weapons and combat is very satisfying. A warning though, your weapons do wear out and they do break. If you're into the Hexon/Heretic series, you will definetly like this series.

Bring powerful nostalgia feelings!

Today videogames cannot bring feelings you only would get with pieces of ancient broken art as Witchaven I & II: - The game was difficult to set-up - Sometimes it wont even start or had crashes everywhere - Saving the game was a nightmare depending on your PC - And it was glitchy in terms on playing which made the game quite challenging. Sounds like a pain in the ass, right? But it dind't felt that way, back then. This was just the normal drill on PC gaming during the 90s. On the other hand, this was one of the first first person shooters with prerendered graphics! And let me tell something: you that was a hell of revolution during that time. Closest experience to reality, closest experience to be Arnold in Conan or some brawny hero from Richard Corben's marvelous mind. You had to be there to dig what I'm saying... Now, you have to understand that all this dificulties were not in bane. Thanks to these hellish PC type of games, the domestic console industry took off, because there was a market niche that was not in condition and had not patience to deal with all this technical challenges or didn't had the financial muscle to pay a fortune for a 486 or a Pentium PC. These people never played Witachaven and never delightly tasted all this tehcnical nightmarish charm that made you feel like you was playing a challenging state of the art videogame. This feeling of "unreachable gaming" just died with that generation and can only been understood by those that lived during that period of time. After that, patches became popular, PSX worked just by inserting a disc in his mouth and the rest is history. Amazing times! I never finished Witachven due to all this technical glitches, but the intensity an excitement I had back then, still remains inside of me. I've been waiting for years to have this: one single easy going install (without reviving that old pain), with some improvements made by somebody that knows what he/she's doing...and now I can be that little boy again!

Oh my childhood

I remember trying to install this game on a Win98 computer, about 20 years ago, choosing sound card details and whatnot during the installation. For a long while the game would refuse to save the progress, forcing me to start from scratch every time. I could not find a solution for it. I don't know how but eventually I found out that choosing nothing for the sound card during installation would save this issue for me and I could finally save the game progress. Not long after I finished the game, unable to listen to the outro but still, imagining what was happening in my then boundless imagination as a child. I miss those times, the imagination that I have lost and the taste of playing these games with many difficulties. Thank you GOG for bringing this game back!

I crave this style of medieval fantasy.

The box art is cool. The game's artstyle style is cool. I really dig this style of dark fantasy and melee combat. Its super satisfying slashing through hordes of demons. Some might not enjoy its simplicity, but its definitely up my alley. For 2 games at $5 each, why not give it a shot? For many like me, its a hidden gem.
