WHAT'S INSIDE THIS RELEASE
You're getting two builds: patched (Enhanced) and retail (Original) for those of you who prefer an unaltered experience as a bonus. Both builds are running on DOSBox with a custom configuration tool. The Enhanced build features fixes introduced in EGwhaven, a must-have community project, which addresses an array of bugs and issues with the game (we'd like to thank ETTiNGRiNDER for the contribution to this release). Additionally, the controls are re-mapped to what you'd expect to see as a default in a first-person game nowadays.
You can access the Original Build through Additional Executables section in GOG GALAXY or find it in the game folder.
For random reasons, I wanted to try other FPS games out of the realm of Dooms, Quakes, Serious Sams, Dukes .etc which lead me to Witchaven. I got to say, this game feels entirely like a poor man's version of Heretic in every way possible way. This is a game I'm not ashamed to cheat in because it looks to test my patience with it's obscure and clunky gameplay.
The only extra point I'll give this game is that it's enemies manage to make me feel unsettled. Which is saying a lot considering the atrocities I've faced in other FPS games that I just blow away without a second thought.
Not everything is bad though. (Which is surprising when i think about that the devs)
Also i had to cut things in "Gameplay" due to character limitations. Would have been longer.
Introduction:
I bought this game a few years back on a flee market and thought it looks interesting.
So i fired up my DOSBOX and checked it out.
I didn't finished the game to the end and watched a bit over halfway through the game an Let's Play.
The story:
Not really interesting in any way. But the point of the game is not the story, so i think it's fine.
I think i don't really spoiler anything when i say: It's basically just "Someone does evil. Kill the leader!"
Graphics:
Graphically i think it is fine. It looks not that bad for it's time though i prefer drawn stuff over this more "realistic" or photographed artstyle in those games. The artstyle has a typical dark medieval fantasy flavor to it and doesn't really make anything different or implements something new. But hey, it doesn't have to to be honest.
The Level design:
Sadly, i didn't played the game for years and can't remember the exact level layouts. I remember that i didn't liked it.
The sound design:
There i just checked out some video so my brain doesn't trick me.
The music isn't really good but also not really bad. Some ambient sounds can be a bit too loud.
But overall it seems ok to me.
Gameplay:
This is the part i was afraid of talking about. I think it is horrible. I don't like it in any way. Combat is even for it's time really clunky and doesn't really offer much. The reason why i didn't finished the game was boredom of this part.
Specially if you compare it to other games. And the fact that this game was meant to be more melee focused is not it's saving grace to be honest.
The weapons you collect can break seemingly at random. The RPG elements seem to only matter a bit when it comes to HP, which probably is a good thing here.
And many more things.
The gameplay ruined it for me completely.
