It's time for a new generation of pilots to take the helm!
After the Border Worlds conflict of Wing Commander 4, the galaxy breathes a sigh of relief for peace has come at last. The hero of the Confederation, Colonel Chris Blair, decides to transfer to the Naval Forces. The Confederation decides its time to retire some of the old guard to make room for new hotshot pilots. Lance Casey and his best friend Max Garrett are fresh-from-the-Academy rookies looking to make their mark on the TCS Midway. Just as they are getting comfortable, a distress call from their former enemy, the Kilrathi, makes what would seem a routine mission into something else entirely...
Wing Commander 5: Prophecy is the last in a long line of classic space combat simulators. You'll take on the role of Lance Casey as he performs dangerous missions for the Confederacy while on assignment on the TCS Midway. Engage in conversation via glorious late 90s FMV with your fellow crew mates. Match your wits and skill in space combat against an all-new alien threat whose coming was foretold by an ancient Kilrathi prophecy of the end of the universe. Arm yourself with a vast variety of death-dealing weaponry and fight back the enemy!
Not only a new cast and a pretty ok space drama, but also good solid shooting and space battling! Not as good as Freespace that totally showed it up a year later, but it was a good last gasp for the FMV games. It was also one of the first games to try downloadable content.
It was a long time ago that I played this, and I don't remember if the nephilim were insects or fish, but they were not as compelling as the Kilrathi. Also, bugged that all the pilots drank like sailors on shore leave. But that's typical of WWII pilots. Prophecy depicts the life of a fighter pilot as a sad, pathetic one of self-medicating away the terrors of open space.
There are no decisions to be made outside the missions themselves. You don't romance technicians or fellow pilots. Which was too much responsibility for me in III and IV it turns out.
And the explosions of the enemy fighters is really rather satisfying.
For those that loved Wing Commanders 3 and 4 for the atmosphere and storyline, this will disappoint. The shift from story to gameplay is evident and while this may be welcomed by many die-hard flight sim fans, the game just feels unmemorable to everyone else. Blair is back but he doesn't seem involved in the forgettable saga any more, and he doesn't seem to care much either.
Hi.
I´m playing the game and think it is quite enjoyable.
But I have a problem on one mission, called "No surrvivors" (T´Lan 8, http://www.wcnews.com/guides/wcptlanmeth.shtml )
I cannot go to NAV 2 and help the pilotes that transmitted the SOS.
Can you do that and how did you ?
I can bring up the map (ctrl+N) and I can select NAV 2 with the mouse and joystick. But as soon I go back to cock-pit the navpoint to Midway is selected. A bit frustating, but as far as I have read it does not matter for the story.
i enjoyed this game when i first got it, infact the callsigns i always used in 1 and 2, i never knew were actually used for the Hero of the Confederation until i played the mission to where hes actually on ur wing. the main thing i didnt like about this game is the way u kill Cap Ships, its not a giant field of wreckage, but instead the ship stays intact more or less just with explosions raking the hull. and u HAVE to go after the bridge and engine areas if u wanna get a kill quickly, i remember all u gotta to is target the ship and fire a torpedo into the hull. didnt matter where it hit just as long as the torp made contact. this game u didnt get that OR the wreckage bits. still i did enjoy learning that Mark Hamill played the legendary Christopher "Maverick" Blair, but i was VERY sad to see him die at the end.
