It's time for a new generation of pilots to take the helm!

After the Border Worlds conflict of Wing Commander 4, the galaxy breathes a sigh of relief for peace has come at last. The hero of the Confederation, Colonel Chris Blair, decides to transfer to the Naval Forces. The Confederation decides its time to retire some of the old guard to make room for new hotshot pilots. Lance Casey and his best friend Max Garrett are fresh-from-the-Academy rookies looking to make their mark on the TCS Midway. Just as they are getting comfortable, a distress call from their former enemy, the Kilrathi, makes what would seem a routine mission into something else entirely...

Wing Commander 5: Prophecy is the last in a long line of classic space combat simulators. You'll take on the role of Lance Casey as he performs dangerous missions for the Confederacy while on assignment on the TCS Midway. Engage in conversation via glorious late 90s FMV with your fellow crew mates. Match your wits and skill in space combat against an all-new alien threat whose coming was foretold by an ancient Kilrathi prophecy of the end of the universe. Arm yourself with a vast variety of death-dealing weaponry and fight back the enemy!

Lots of memories here

My first wing commander game, first time playing any game this nice with live action cut scenes and 3d graphics that looked great (for the time) I had a logitech flight stick, I think it was force-feed back, P233MMX intel computer (Packard Bell) Voodoo 3000 PCI 3DFX graphics card and 16mb of ram with the game installed on a 5.4 gb hard drive and 15" monitor.. got it from sears for 3500$ if you can believe it.. right after I bought it they put a 266mhz model out - and that's when I learned how things work with computers. 15 years old, 14.4kbps dial up modem and the world was my oyster. I may or may not have played this for days on end and got in trouble for skipping chores... can't wait to do it again but now I'm married with two kids :)

The best example of arcade space combat

When I first played Wing Commander Prophecy I have to admit I was a little disappointed. This is because it followed on from Wing Commander IV; the greatest example of story telling in a 90s video game. Great cast, production values etc. Prophecy does not have these things. The plot is adequate, the acting is not up to levels seen in 3 and 4, however it compares favorably to any other FMV title of the era. At the time the lack of conversation branching was disappointing, this would have saved filming costs and production (WCP was only 3 CDs, compared to the 6 of WCIV). However mission branching based on your mission performance remains. Where Prophecy shines is gameplay. With each passing year it becomes harder and harder to return to the other entries, but Prophecy holds its own. The simulator is back, and this is the first title where I really spent some time with that feature; each kill is satisfying With smooth controls, 3D acceleration and a very high quality game engine Wing Commander Prophecy stands the test of time and is the entry in the franchise I return to most frequently.

Last but not least

Origins final entry into the Wing Commander Series was the most polished version of a by-then familiar product. A game that recaptures some of the spirit of the original Wing Commander by copying part of that games setup - a single carrier, fighting against the odds with the player a rookie thrown in at the deep end. FMV as well done as ever even if the roster of Hollywood names is down to Mark Hamill (as an NPC version of the character we played in earlier titles) & Tom Wilson as the comic relief that is Maniac. Controls & gameplay remain fundamentally unchanged from the rest of the series but if you liked those this is no bad thing. It's by no means a simulator - and was never intended to be - but the dogfighting remains as addictive as ever & the plot remains engaging enough to see you through to the end. All in all, this game is the best way for those who missed the series the 1st time around to see what the fuss was about without having to ask their parents what "sprites" are! Well worth $6.00 of anybodys money & the community support remains fantastic - fully expect the free addon "Secret Ops" to make an appearance here at some point given GOGS great track record with earlier titles. Now, have to excuse me, there's bugs to squash...

Still pretty good stuff

As a lot people out there, I had played this after previous 4 Wing Commanders. And althought Chris Robert was not involved in doing this one, it still terrific. It's actually became more strategic, and you get to see epic battles, instead of usual small scirmishes WC-style. So now it is more akin to Tie-Fighter and Freespace. The plot is not as thrilling and dramatic as in previous games, but the acting is still good and engaging. Couple of advices for new ones: 1. Don't forget , that you can switch targets in map mode, while the game is paused. Immensively helps in this pesky escort mission we all "love" so much. 2. Grab the fan patches for this one, wcnews have a lot of them. I don't think this release already have them, but DVD movies patch and OpenGL patch are a must!
