Wing Commander™ 3 Heart of the Tiger™

WC3 may create a good impression while playing firsts missions. But once you play it serious you start to notice some MAJOR flaws: 1- The joystick is buggy. It can be solved using an external DLL file, but then the sound becames glitchy. You have to re-setup the DOSBOX configuration. I spend almost a day configuring it. 2- I played in ace difficulty. While the first missions were ok, soon they became abussive. I had to do the game easier when I started facing more than 25 enemies. 3- The communications: I play with my rear camera, or shields view in the left hud. The developers had the stupid idea of showing the enemy or allies faces in that HUD when they talk you, and in big battles you're really screwed while they talk the same canned sentence once and again. Like you were blind. I tried to shut down the communication but ofter my wings denied. 4- AI... the AI is created against YOU, not against your wing. I remember a mission with Maniac as my wing, where I had not a clue what was happening. So tired about it I enabled god mode and stop to look at the problem. While Maniac was flying freely, I had EIGHT enemy ship shooting me at my six. I asked for help and ... denied. This may be another bug. 5- And talking about bugs: there is a lot: infinite enemy respawn, crashes... etc. Save often, in each mission. 6- The video scenes are cool when you start playing them. Later they're boring and repetitive, like the elevator. 7- Stupid Admiral: The first time I had to eject, my score was around 130 enemies and few capital ships. I lost ONE ship. Then the admiral was waiting for me to let me know how bad I was. Come on! This game may be nice for the 90's, but is very bad if you play today for the first time and you want to finish it (that's why you purchase games, right?). Avoid this like the plague. There are better games here in GOG.

I played this game for the first time when I was only thirteen years old and, yet, it is one of the games that I remember most about my games as an early gamer. The original two Wing Commander games had been special, but when I saw this one, looking at the intense graphics, the amazing talent and the sheer game play, not even to mention the active choices you can make during, I was beyond awed. This game was so ahead of its time that words can't express how much. Anyone who plays this game, I guarantee that see that it could fit into the modern age of gaming without skipping a beat. Buy this game, play it. You won't be disappointed.

WCIII was a defining moment in PC gaming history. Bringing full motion video (FMV) to the space combat genre with player choices and conseqences was completely revolutionary at the time. Taking advantage of quickly improving game engine technology along with the relatively new multimedia capabilities of CDROM drives and sound cards WCIII is a landmark in PC gaming. Mark "Luke Skywalker" Hamill and Thomas "Biff Tannen" Wilson lead an excellent cast for the FMV portions of the game and along with the engaging story are a big reason why this game still holds up after all these years. The included "extras" like the deleted scenes and behind the scenes vids make this a priceless purchase for me as I had never seen them before and watching the behind the scenes video really brought back great memories. I still have the original WCIII, WCIV, and WCV games in their original boxes and have played them every couple of years or so via DosBox, etc... but the fact that GOG has put together a great installer that makes WCIII easy to install and play on modern PCs will hopefully bring many non-techie PC gamers into the WCIII fan club. At a price of $6 dollars every PC gamer of any age should buy this game from GOG now. As a side note.... there is a great non-commercial website call Wing Commander CIC that has a ton of fan related stuff and is really a great place to fully explore the Wing Commander games and universe. This site has been around for over a decade and the love and care the admins have put into the site over all these years really shows. (no google ads, pop-ups, adverstisements, etc)

You could easily call this Wing Commander meets Star Wars, and you'd be right. Not only is the scope and feel of the story more like a space opera than the previous two games, but Mark Hamill himself is among the principal cast. Along with him are other staples of fantasy and sci-fi, like Malcom McDowell and John Rhys-Davies. The game originally came on several discs, because they essentially filmed a whole sci-fi movie for it. The next big change is that the ships and other objects are no longer represented by multi-sided "3D" sprites, but rather fully texture-mapped 3D objects. It's everything you loved about Wing Commander 1&2, but much better. There are also multiple endings, ensure some good replay value.

i played WC3 back in the day when it was first released and it was one of my favourite games with a great cinematic feel to it. when i saw it was available i had to get it again and while the cut screens are a tiny bit choppy they are fine and watchable, the ingame graphics still work fine. infact the only issue i was having was getting a joystick to work.. if you can calirate fine but it doesnt work in flight then when you launch on a mission hit ALT+0 and select joystick it uses keyboard by default. simply put it works, its aged gracefully and is great even over a decade and a half later
