Description
Whispers of a Machine is a Sci-Fi Nordic Noir that tells the story of Vera, a cybernetically augmented special agent tasked with investigating a string of murders. These brutal killings obscure a sinister truth, as Vera soon finds ties to a group of fanatics committed to creating an AI superintelligence — a pursuit outlawed for nearly a century.

Complicating things, a great loss from Vera's past comes back to haunt her, making her question her own sanity and everything she stands for.

As an agent of the Central Bureau, Vera is equipped with an advanced nano-substance called Blue. This rare and sought-after technology allows her to develop superhuman abilities adapted to her psychological mindset.

Choose your playstyle and utilize these augmentations to investigate, gather information, and solve puzzles with multiple solutions.

Will Vera’s unique blend of skills and intuition be enough to solve the case, or will she discover that things are more ambiguous than they seemed? In this emotionally gripping story with existential twists and multiple endings, Vera's actions will have monumental consequences not only for herself, but for all of humanity...

  • INVESTIGATION, AUGMENTED: Will Vera approach situations with a more empathetic, analytical, or assertive style? Your choices will impact her augmentations and subsequent puzzle solutions.
  • A POST-AI FUTURISTIC DYSTOPIA: Immerse yourself in a realized world of beautifully hand-drawn pixel art design and gorgeous settings influenced by the Nordics.
  • POINT-AND-CLICK INNOVATION: A groundbreaking entry to the point-and-click adventure game genre by the experienced developers of Kathy Rain and The Samaritan Paradox.
  • PROFESSIONALLY VOICED: 4,000+ lines of dialogue with full English voice acting, directed by Wadjet Eye Games' Dave Gilbert.

The new standard for Point & Click

I picked this game up on impulse and it has simply blown me away. Fans of Beneath a Steel Sky will feel right at home in this beautiful, cyber-dystopian detective adventure. Nearly every gripe I've had with point & click adventures of the past have been addressed and amended. For example, by holding the space bar, you can see every clickable object - eliminating the frustration of simply not know all of your options when solving a problem. The story is gripping, puzzles rewarding, characters interesting, soundtrack beautiful, and the augmentations with differing abilities based on your play style are the icing on the cake. I cannot recommend this game enough. It is well deserving of a seat near the all time greats like Broken Sword and Flight of the Amazon Queen. Whispers of a Machine sets the new gameplay standard for point & click adventures from here on out.

Future Noir - In Scenic Scandinavia

WoaM is an excellent point and click adventure, with a phenomenal setting. The characters are well-developed, and Vera is a compelling protagonist. I enjoyed the investigation, deducing who had acted and for what motive. What I was not prepared for was the reward of additional skills suited to my playstyle. My only objection, like Kathy Rain before, is the brevity of the game. I wanted to explore the world more, understand how we reached the current state of affairs, and get to know the characters in more depth. But I cannot count my desire to have MORE of the game as a negative. I can't wait for the next game, and am sad to have to wait for another few years.

Well crafted but short and underwhelming

Firstly, please note that although I enjoy a point 'n click adventure game every now and then, this is not my genre of choice, hence my standards may be different then yours. The game has a great "cyberpunk postapocalypse meets sweedish crime story" premise. I loved it out of the gates and the game - much like a swedish whodunnit - manages to keep things contained and intimate. The graphincs are fun and while they sometimes are a bit illegible, they serve their purpose and are entertaining. All interactions are voiced which is awesome. I liked, that your character has several skills and that different choices lead to different skills that will yield different outcomes. It souns better on paper than in practice, but it's still a cool feature. The puzzles, although not extremely original, are entertaining and most of the time strike a good balance between cerebrally stimulating and convoluted. There's not that many of them though. The story itself is interesting, albeit not groundbreaking. There is very little to it's "detective" aspect, as you progress through the story on a linear path without really having many suspects. The game resolves itself without your detective skills, so if you're looking for a detective adventure game, this isn't it. It's more of a "figure out the puzzle to progress the story" type of thing. My problem with the game was that it's rather short and underwhelming. You get this set of cool skills, the premise of a good detective story, those fun detective mechanics, but it doesn't seem to manage to spread it's wings. Some of the characters and threads don't really go anywhere and the potentially great mechanics are surprisingly unexploited. I had a feeling that there is just so much more that could have been done with this game. Still, the end product is fine and I hope it's creators will explore their own game to greater lenghts to give us a better developed product.

Beautiful game.

Reasons to love Whispers of a Machine: A good detective game, with the Philip K. Dick-esque plot, set in a postapocalyptic future where computers are outlawed. The main character is augmented, giving her superhuman abilities that are quite fun to use. The plot - and the character with her powers - changed based on the decisions you make. The choices are not "good/bad", but representing different approaches to problems. The autosaving system works well with this development. Now I'm thinking of replaying the whole game just to change one decision, and it really sounds like a good idea.

Probably must-buy for point/click fans

In short: if you liked Wadjet games (like Gemini Rue) storytelling but was frustrated by the look or the exhausting interface, this could be for you. The story is on a high level, the game is polished and all dialogues and hero remarks are voiced. The interface is good, almost as good as it possibly could be in a point-and-click. And there are no good old "find a pixel" or "combine everything in your inventory" tricks. Also you can "fast-transfer" between locations by double clicking. Finally, an adventure which respects your time! The game also gave me some Syberia vibes, small provincial town in a middle of nowhere, old rusty tech everywhere, going back and forth talking to strange but charismatic habitants... I think still there are several things which could be improved: custom augmentations are rarely used and these uses are unobvious. I had to look for a guide to find out that I need to use my new aug twice. And the final decisions are too "binary" i.e. I could thing of a few options to resolve the situation little better (like do one thing and don't do another) but the game didn't give me a choice. Still it's 5/5. Nicely drawn and voiced adventure.
