Whateverland Prologue is available on GOG.com. You can download it here

Whateverland is a hand-painted point-n-click adventure game with a branching dialogue system, non-linear gameplay, various endings and unique in-game turn-based board game.

Find your way out of a magical prison called Whateverland with a charming ghost Nick by your side, get to meet the charismatic locals, steal and deceive or be a good boy and help others to discover all the different endings to this bizarre adventure.

Each level can be completed in at least two different ways: you either steal from people or help them. The rich branching dialogues will tell you more about the world and its inhabitants, as well as influence your relationship with Whateverlanders and your sidekick Nick.

There is no particular order of chapters in this game. More than that, if you ever feel stuck, you can drop your current chapter at any point in the story, and move to another one. And then another one. And another... You get the point.

Whateverland features 19 mini-games in total, although you won’t be able to complete all of them in a single playthrough. Along with challenges like giving a tattoo to a merman and making top-notch ramen (you know, the usual), on the path of a thief you will encounter a variety of locks simply begging to be cracked.

Vincent is a skilled thief who decides to steal a precious necklace from a mansion of a lonely old woman named Beatrice. His plan would have gone perfectly well, but when she catches him red-handed, she turns out to be an ancient, powerful witch.

As a punishment, Beatrice sends him to the parallel world she has created, where the witch traps those she considers her enemies. The first inhabitants of this bizarre world called it Whateverland, and since then it kind of stuck.

Vincent teams up with a charming, yet a little annoying ghost named Nick, and together they have to find their way out.

Are they going to make it? That's for you to decide!

  • A not so classic point-n-click.
  • You can steal stuff. Or not – it’s your call.
  • Your actions define the ending and what people think of you.
  • The most annoying sidekick in the universe. (We still love you, Nick)
  • You can talk to people. Not sure they’re gonna talk to you though.
  • Turn-based strategy sport simulator included in the game. With magic.
  • Loads of mini-games. At least 2.
  • Music recorded with a real sextet. How sexy is that?
  • Beautiful hand-drawn art style.

Alex in Whateverland

OK, it's not Alex; it's Vincent. But if Alice in Wonderland was made into a game, this would be it. Caveats: I don't like star ratings, but I gave this a top rating to balance the person who wrote a negative review with little basis. Also, be warned that there is some saucy language which may bother some people. Not me. For fans of P-C adventure games, this is a wonderful entry, and highly recommended. The game is fun to play, and the puzzles are mostly logical and as creative as the bizarre characters. Vincent is the perfect "straight man" to balance the strange goings-on in Whateverland. As we have come to expect from Indie adventure games, this entry is not without its shortcomings. One of the puzzles (Cuckoo clock) will be nearly impossible to solve without "guidance". And the instructions for the Bell&Bones mini-game are woefully brief. But these puzzles can be bypassed because there are different routes you can take. Which brings us to the point of replay value, which is good. I can't wait to return to play the picture game in the Sisters home that is similar to Gorogoa. In short, this is a really fun game with interesting and challenging puzzles. What more can you ask?

A humble request

Please stop writing negative reviews and giving negative ratings based on the developers' ethnicity. Whenever you denigrate a game for the ethnicity of its developers, I have a compulsion to buy that game. It's a compulsion of mine that I cannot stop. I fear it will ruin me financially. So once again I ask you, please stop.

Not too bad BUT buggy

I got the 'demo' years ago and didn't notice when the final thing finally came out after a number of delays. Fair enough.. things happen. Wasn't too keen on the full price for what I had seen in the Demo and some images so waited for it on offer and it was clearly worth what I paid for it but... the game seams to be lacking polish.. you get a fairly common problem of the subtitles not always lining up with the vocal lines, with one weird case that sounds like they left in earlier (or just not quite ready) lines for a couple of bits. That's not a huge issue. Some of the story seams a bit lacking in places and it does big jumps in logic (like at one point, it seamed to say I was in nick's house which.. How the hell Vincent knew that or anything I have no clue... Since (unless you need a tiny bit of hinting) Nick doesn't really do too much in the game, it was a bit weird... There are also a number of bugs which can be almost game ending.. the B&B mini game which is quite a major part of the game has a few HUGE bugs in it, like if a bookash is on a 'move two' hex but can't move 2, it just hangs and won't let any thing be done to carry on the game. Kinda need to either forfeit the match or reload (though I must admit, I didn't try the 'auto win' option). This problem of not being able to make a move it wants to (lack of error checker/handler) happens way more then you would expect.. and it's very annoying cause there are a few cases where this either happens alot by design, or CAN happen alot if you try to do a move without 100% thinking about possibly errors. There are also problems with Hotspots either not triggering at all or the buttons just closing because you didn't click 'just right' but these are more annoying then game ending.. However with the B&B bug.. this can lead to the 'Fix the Radio station' being impossible as if you fail a B&B match, it won't let you rematch.. so you can't get a perfect 'Good boy' route, which is pretty annoying.

I wanted to love it but...

... even though I loved the art style, the voice acting (most of the time) the atmosphere and Vincent's personality, the bad game design, lack of direction and incredibly lack-luster storytelling just killed it for me. It took me way too long to figure out how to pan the scene when I was zoomed in so I didn't have to squint at my computer screen (controls are not clearly defined in most scenes and you cannot check the Settings either)- although I did mostly enjoy those parts once I figured out the controls. They are not hard, some are better than others. You don't need hints. Relax... Reviews keep saying Nick offers hints? He does what now? Everytime I clicked on him, Vincent would just move to his spot and say nothing. But you really shouldn't need hints for this game anyway. There aren't 'mini GAMES', there is 'mini GAME' which, is not only misleading, but so incredibly infuriating I skipped every game with a ball of yarn and there were no penalties for doing so, so there is absolutely no point in bothering to play 'bug soccer'- it is just there to fluff out the game. This game clocks in at about the 4-5 hour mark. Choices ultimately don't matter- do what you think is the most fun. For me, that was stealing everyone's stuff, but the only choice that matters is Stay or Go, then the game ends so it doesn't matter at all anyway. I have no interest in playing this game again as I played how I wanted to the first time and nothing bad happened. So crime does pay, I guess. At least the $2.50 I spent on it

Great style but frustrating gameplay

I like the style and heart of this game overall. I THOUGHT I would love the fact that you can work on multiple 'puzzle scenarios' simultaneously and aren't locked into working linearly on one puzzle situation alone until you 'solve' it and proceed. In practice though.....now I realize that this makes a game very disjointed and makes it very hard for it to carry a meaningful plot. Without any compelling plot carrying me on, it was impossible to force myself to finish this game, since many of the puzzles are far too obtuse, and the game-within-a-game sports game is not fun. I do like the style of the developer though, and hope to see more from them in the future. But with more plot / structure and better designed puzzles next time please!
