Why buy on GOG.COM?

I didn't read reviews before buying this so I didn't know about the updates missing. Not sure if that is no longer the case, but I had fun playing this. The dialogue is pretty funny, and there's a slider for combat speed which I almost immediately bumped to max. For $5 on sale it's a good few hours.
This is a fun game to play, but the writing really sets it apart. Very smart, silly, and witty. No matter how many play-throughs you do, you simply must read the narrator's spittoon arguments in full, every time. Of course you will always do the opposite of what he says, but he paints such a vivid picture... I take my fake pope hat off to the writers.
Also, some of the puzzles and codes are legit tough, which I appreciate. It took me a good bit of effort to get through all the ornate graves at the military cemetery. Oh, and the Shaggy Dog Cave! You should really try your best to figure out the puzzle of the plaques before you get to the last one...so worth it!
The downsides are that (a) it's a little too easy (even if you get the hart hat), and (b) it's a little too short. Not too short to be worth it...it's got many hours of good material...but it definitely leaves you wanting more. So, as the orphan said to the man who gave them the lock-picking book: "please sir, may I have some more?"
Honestly if things were a bit less obtuse in places this could easily start a series of easy introductory RPG games. Really hope the company makes more
This feels like a natural evolution of Kingdom of Loathing, which is what I was hoping. But it's also a bit of a mixed bag and gets a little too drawn out to stay engaging the whole way.
I got the impression less effort was put into the writing quality than KoL had, and it seems like there's a lot of mediocre filler. Like someone had to rush to fill in all the slots they created for text. My guess is they wanted to make a longer game but ended up too overstretched to give each part its creative due.
Also the simple gameplay, aside from the traditionally weird and convoluted KoL-style quest steps, sometimes makes me think it's more of a kids game. And it would actually be good game for kids, except they probably wouldn't get a lot of the references.
