Traverse snake-infested gulches, punch skeletons wearing cowboy hats, grapple with demon cows, and investigate a wide variety of disgusting spittoons.

Talk your way out of trouble as a silver-tongued Snake Oiler, plumb the refried mysteries of the cosmos as a wise and subtle Beanslinger, or let your fists do the talking as a fierce Cow Puncher. Explore a vast open world and encounter a colorful cast of characters, some of whom are good, many of whom are bad, and a few of whom are ugly.
  • a sprawling open world, chock full of danger, quests, puzzles, and mysteries
  • lush hand-drawn black and white graphics
  • full stick-figure customization
  • thousands of jokes, gags, and goofs
  • crunchy turn-based combat (but only if you want it)
  • liberal use of the Oxford comma
  • over 50 hats
  • disreputable saloons
  • several gulches
  • a drunk horse

kingdom of loathing for a larger public

Having played and enjoyed kingdom of loathing a lot, I was eager to give my money for west of loathing. I was not disappointed, the game is well rounded, well designed, funny and meant to be replayed. I found the game easy and lacking a challenge on the default setting and recommend activating the hard mode. While at it also disable the auto-level mechanism and enable the walking funny when you get it. West of loathing reuses some of kingdom of loathing identity but in a far west setting and designed for a larger audience. The story is well written with much humor (though less than KoL) and has several plots you can explore or not. WoL like KoL has his share of clever references all along the story with much attention to detail. WoL offers a rich world with a lot of encounters, places, items, quests and the downside is that you can lose track of what and where, and sometimes get lost in your inventory. Other than that there is not much downside to this game. The game worked for me and I enjoyed the immersive story(ies) as I felt a connection and caring about the various characters met along the game. I definitely recommend it to everyone as long as you are not reluctant to read as this game has a lot of text to read to tell you its stories.

Hilarious western gag-RPG

WoL is a game in the "Loathing" universe (the first being the browser RPG Kingdom of Loathing -still hope there'll be an offline version someday). In this universe, meat is currency, logic is optional and a baguette is a propre melee weapon. In this game, you can play either a Cowpuncher (fighter/barbarian), Beanslinger (Mage) or Snake Oiler (rogue/ranger), which means that you'll have different personal options and unique locations in-game, as well as different build options (turn off auto-lvl, manual is more fun). You leave the family farm, meet a pardner and head out west, dealing with various evils in turn-based fights. Each pardner has their own leveling system and specific skills, all useful. Like KoL, WoL uses stick figures and doodles, with simple sight gags on top of the (many) descriptions. Most of the interaction will be text-based, with the game hurling walls of text at you and options to choose. And believe me there is a TON of possible interactions, most puzzles have mays ways of solving (sometimes including, but not limited to, violence) and the game rewards brains, but brawns might get more special items. Dialogs are plentiful and funny, with many clever references. Some of the major side quests can be cryptic and some parts only give you one shot per character, which is a little frustrating, but that's about it, as there is no permadeath, you lose nothing and characters are healed after each fight. You can wander on the map for random stuff and many locations offer farming points for XP and stuff. A smooth ride all in all. The music is excellent and gives a Spaghetti vibe, both herois and ironic. It's a great listen on its own. The amount of stuff is staggering (some well-hidden), the game can be completed in less than 15 hours, the real challenge is in "hard mode". Also you can walk like an idiot if you learn how to. I give it 4 stars because I find it a little short and the ending a bit abrupt, but it's still great.

Now fully supported on GOG

Ignore the outdated reviewes. The game now matches 1:1 with what's on Steam. The game itself is as fun and engaging as the original reviewes mention. If you like humor, charm, exploration, and using your noggin every once in a while then this is a perfect addition to your library.

Hilarious, light entertainment

Don't expect too much of an intellectual challenge with this. It is meant to be light hearted and tongue-in-cheek entertainment. For me, it was well worth the $11, especially since there are few games like this available for Linux. A great time killer. I'd buy again when/if they come out with a similar game.

Guns, Snakes, and Necromancy... and Cows

Ok, so I see a number of low rating posts throughout the reviews below... It seems that some people missed the point of this game: To laugh and shoot things and bring things back from the dead! Oh my goodness I have not laughed out-loud so many times while playing a game before! If you want a good laugh at every spaghetti western stereotype then THIS IS YOUR GAME! Honestly, it's worth it just for the comedy. But there's more! The actual turn based combat is pretty fun as well. You have a few classes to choose from at the beginning to help determine your playing style (I chose to work with snakes... Loved it!) and there's opportunities to become a full fledged necromancer by the end of the game, if you so choose. Riding through the desert with your "pardner" on your special trusty steed... The game is just a gem. I can't say that I encountered the same weapon or hat twice... So many unique items and each with their own abilities or quirks... You can tell this was an absolute labor of love. Every location has its charms, and feels so right within the western setting they developed. Oh, and there's some "ancient alien technology" to be found along the way as well! (Seriously, they thought of everything!) The music and atmosphere and the writing for the conversations... all spot on. Such witty responses (some corny, but it's intentional) had me laughing so hard, but wanting to progress to see where the paths before me led. Oh, and the Cows... demon spawn. The cows are demon spawn. Everything was great until "the cows came home" and then things were bad. Very bad. Play the game to see what I'm talking about! I can't recommend this game enough! The difficulty does scale with you, as the previous reviewer states... But it helps the game to last longer. And trust me, you want this game to last! I was sad to see it end. Thankfully there's the DLC with more content to wade through! Seriously... If you know what you're buying ahead of time this is a 5 star game!
