Traverse snake-infested gulches, punch skeletons wearing cowboy hats, grapple with demon cows, and investigate a wide variety of disgusting spittoons.

Talk your way out of trouble as a silver-tongued Snake Oiler, plumb the refried mysteries of the cosmos as a wise and subtle Beanslinger, or let your fists do the talking as a fierce Cow Puncher. • a sprawling open world, chock full of danger, quests, puzzles, and mysteries
  • lush hand-drawn black and white graphics
  • full stick-figure customization
  • thousands of jokes, gags, and goofs
  • crunchy turn-based combat (but only if you want it)
  • liberal use of the Oxford comma
  • over 50 hats
  • disreputable saloons

Comedy, adventure and loathing.

It's not often you come across a quirky game like this. West of Loathing is a spin off RPG adventure set in the Kingdom of Loathing Universe, which is itself a free to play, comedy-based, browser MMORPG. What makes West of Loathing stand out from its predecessor is the setting, out West of KoL. You play as one of three character classes, and for my playthrough, I picked the Beanslinger, a mage type whose magicka is based on the baked bean. You'll find loads of comedy, references to pop culture and references to even things from Real Life. You'll laugh so hard just trying to play it, but be warned, you will need to ensure your stats are buffed constantly, as this game is tough. This game is a true gem, though, worth every penny. Be sure to check it out and just enjoy yourself.

1 ★ not for the game, but for the devs.

I liked Kingdom of Loathing and I am certain that this game is awesome, but the devs have abandoned the GOG version (Reckonin' at Gun Manor DLC specifically). What's more, they have lied on the GOG forums and elsewhere, repeatedly promising to release it "next week" over the course of 1 (ONE) year and making ridiculous excuses like "programmer on vacation" and "doing one last batch of tests now! Thank you for your patience!" which seem like open mockery to me. Don't buy.

good dumb game, missing patches and DLC

West of Loathing is a spinoff of the memorable browser game Kingdom of Loathing. It's a light, easy RPG with a cute and silly art style and a totally unique style of old time Internet humor. There's also a lot of character customization and exploration that build upon the artistic choices which I found very entertaining. The Achievements to be found in the game are in on the joke and they'll come at you in unexpected ways. I was also surprised by the relative amount of lore and secrets for such a little game. On its own merits, if you go in expecting a game that absolutely revels in its own casualness and refuses to take itself seriously, I'd say it's a 4/5 for what it is. Awesome! However, Buyer Beware: I am writing this review to point out that the GOG version is several patches behind the Steam version. In February 2019, they released a DLC called Reckonin' at Gun Manor which isn't available on the GOG storefront at all, and we are also lacking the soundtrack DLC. This is very unfortunate, because it's such a cute little game, but I don't actually recommend buying it here until the developers get this sorted out. There hasn't been much in the way of communication on the GOG Forums, but they haven't gone completely radio silent either, so make sure you do your due diligence before you decide to purchase. In my opinion, you should be forewarned that if you purchase West of Loathing from GOG it seems you'll probably be getting an inferior version than what's on Steam. That said, what is available on GOG kept me very entertained in its own right, and if the patches and DLC weren't an issue, I'd give it a full recommendation.

No regrets

Did you see what this looks like? If it hadn't been recommended by someone I trust, I never would have bothered to look twice. Bought it anyway and left it in my library for a while. Then I started it up, because it will run on my crappy laptop and BOY! I cannot stop playing this thing! It is funny, it is challenging, well rounded, it has a great flow, there's always varied things to do and it keeps you engaged. I don't regret a thing. And a word to those who recommend buying on steam rather than gog: The dlc is here and you shouldn't fault a tiny indie dev for working with one distribution platform after another. I am sure that the decision making behind the delay was not: "Oh we don't like the gamers on gog". Otherwise they would've just not released here in the first place. TL,DR: Buy it - Play it - Regret nothing

If you enjoyed Kingdom of Loathing...

This game has everything that made Kingdom of Loathing fun, such as the quirky humour, the stick-figure drawings, the entertaining game structure, and the complete failure to take itself seriously. It has none of the things that made KoL annoying, such as the UI that forced you to go repeatedly back to the map, the limit on per-day actions. If you enjoyed KoL, you will enjoy this even more. If you haven't played KoL, then do so immediately! If you played KoL but didn't enjoy it, then there's probably no hope for you.
