High expectations call great disapointment

Sadly I am really disapointed. I don't know where the game is trying to go: it adds layers over layers of gameplay, I found none of them really interesting (choose the option that fills the right gauge most of the time). It also felt very confusing and random in multiple occasion which didn't help. The game seems to borrow gameplay elements from many directions but fails to create a link between them to make something coherent. The visual art and the music are nice but the sound effects are lacking leading to a constant very calm atmosphere even when you're supposed to talk in front of an hysterical crown asking for blood.

I expected more

At first I want to say, that I finished this title at PS4 version, but I don't think it changes much, because I'm mainly dissapointed with the story mode. Also I played this game like a year ago, so I dont remember it all well. **SPOILER ALERT** It was interesting at the beggining, but more I played I felt like I don't have real choices in the game. In my first playthrough I died because people roasted me, and that's fine, you have to be careful with your public opinion and cases at court. I finished completly my second playthrough and I figured out that I hate this game. Even if you have great relations with your family, the game decides to mess up your relations to fit in the storyline. There is some "catharsis" plot and the narrator says something like "you are just a puppet in "god"(he mean the player) hands. Confess, when was the last time you have read all the evidences before judgement in any case?", I HAVE READ THEM ALL BIATCH. The story assumes that the player just skips all the cases and judgements arent fair. To be honest, that's the main reason which made me regret I bought this game. It was great idea for the game, but writing ruined whole story

Flawed but good. French version is fine!

Although the game is very linear and the plot developments tend to drag you along while being presented as your own ideas, which is a bit alienating, it still does a good job of putting you in the shoes of someone forced to balance ethics and political expediency in times of social upheaval and terror. The art style is very nice and the atmosphere is quite immersive. I found some of the mini-games a bit tedious, but the pieces fit together well enough overall. I was looking for something similar to the old "Republic: the Revolution", and in this I found a better game of the same style. Another review criticized the French version of the game for the tutoiement in the courtroom dialogues. This is actually historically accurate: in formal settings, revolutionary French etiquette required the pronoun "tu" between individual citizens (see the historian Philippe Wolff's article "Le tu révolutionnaire" on Persée). You do see vouvoiement in many cases in the game, notably among aristocrats.

a masterpiece

This is nothing for shooters, tl;dr-gamers or must-win-with-highscore-people. Its more a interactive piece of art you get into. You might should like this way of experience. You probably cant 'win' the game in any way, bu you can at least come to an end. (btw. if you are at the credits, make shure to wait till the 'outtake scene'!!) For me, it tooks about 20h to get through the game. 20 hours of beeing overwhelmed by the way, game is changing. On Act1 you might trying to be a righteous judge, reading the files, evaluate the cases and try to make fair judgements. But you will notice after a while, that you more and more getting influenced by your own carrier and you cant avoid to get more and more sarcastic and selfish. "I have to think of my family". Of course, who won't? During the game, you get more and more into a nightmare without a chance to wake up. And for me, this matches my idea of the situation during the french revolution and the bloddy terror of robbespierre in a very unique way. Five stars for a stunning experience i probably never had before in about 30years of computer gaming.

A peculiar and one of a kind game

This game is more interesting than 'good' in the traditional sense but for those that seek variation I strongly recommend it. You play as a tribunal judge during the french revolution and the game starts off as fairly simple court simulator where you read through the charges, check the evidence, interrogate the suspect and call witnesses to the stand. You can choose between acquital, prison and the guillotine for the accused at the beginning (but no fines or penal labor) until the revolutionaries withdraw the possibility of dishing out prison time so now it's just death or nothing at all. This makes things a lot more complicated as most would guess and before long you start having to take different societal factions into account as you will otherwise face the blade yourself. Parallel to your court work, your character does his own fair share of political intriguing to strenghten your position in the post-revolutionary country. You are a gifted orator and can use your skill to manipulate both crowds and separate individuals to convince them to support you. The game thus morphs into a political scheming simulator where your conscience and sense of justice seldomly has the final say in court. Certain cases will probably evoke more feelings than others (such as an obvious antisemitic plot to get rid of an old jewish business man) and you soon learn to save up some political goodwill in order to judge more fairly in these cases (if you so choose). Later in the game a new mini-game that focuses on military battles takes up a lot of your time and the game becomes a lot less interesting towards the end but nevertheless We. The Revolution is a fascinating game that I can honestly recommend. If nothing else, it makes for terrific discussion materials amongst your pals!
