An excellent game, let down badly by poor design. A perfect example of this is at the Rail Nomads' Camp where it is necessary to rescue Ralphy; only since my purchase of this game was updated with the latest enhancements (downloaded in full via Gog Installer) Ralphy can no longer be rescued because no matter how fast, how skilled, or anything else your party members are, Ralphy will expire JUST before the totem pole bridge falls into place. - Brute Force, grenades, rocket launchers ...it absolutely does not matter - they will ALWAYS expire just before that bridge is in place.
I'm having a great time with Wasteland 2. It has a few dumb mechanics, a generic story, and occasional bugs, but it's really fun. Planning your positions prior to starting turn-based combat is rewarding. Bits of humor and consequences for your actions make the story engaging, even if it's not that creative. Overall, it's strong enough and similar enough to the classic Fallout games that I feel like it could have been a classic entry in that series.
I was looking for an Xcom substitute and discovered Wasteland 2 and BOY was I not disappointed!
If you love games like the original fallout, Xcom, CRPG's, westerns, or apocalypse settings - this game is for you.
The writing is excellent, the many NPC's hilarious, the game fun and diverse.
It may look a little dated by today's graphics, but I highly recommend trying this game out to anyone. I've played it twice and am considering a 3rd playthrough for the fun of it.
Most of the negative things I experienced were things that should have been found during the game's testing:
- Mouse lag. When using the right mouse button, which is FAR easier than the middle one, there is about a half second of lag before the game says "OK you can turn now." Whether I wait a half second or try turning right away, it seems the game takes half a second to recognize that I am holding the RMB down. Zero issues with using a mouse otherwise.
- Had to fight the game's camera from beginning to end. There was no option for a "free" camera where the game does not take over the camera, and sometimes I would end up staring at a black/blank space because the game set the camera behind walls/structures. It occured almost always "inside."
- My character's portrait bugged after about the 10 hour mark, and two of my characters shared the same portrait, causing me to screw up in combat so, many, times...
- Having no idea my rad suit had to "be equipped."
- Had no idea rockets for launchers did not exist in the game until the half way mark, when the new area traders did not sell them, and I looked it up online.
- Descriptions for items, weapons, and armor are confusing. You get a perk that gives you bonuses for heavy/light armor, but none of the armor had one of those designations.
- Numerous other bugs existed like enemies who can shoot through cement walls that you cannot shoot them through, and having no idea who does or does not benifit from perks, but this review has a word limit.
Positives:
- The game's world is inspired. Though the maps felt small, there was no wasted space.
- The references to 80s culture is not only a wonderful treat, but well done! Hearing the culture club was great, even though it seemed to bug out when I talked to an NPC.
- No SJW/PC culture B.S., and I love it. This is art!
* * * The main story was too simple and bland, but the side quests were fun. If they can get a writer to write a "main quest" I think WL3 will be awesome! * * *
I write this review despite of the fact its last in line and with the new review system no one is going to read it. I just feel obliged towards the game, since it delivered such great fun.
It seems some people feel disappointed for the lack of novelties or a smooth graphic engine: but this game, I feel, everything it does, it does it right.
Music; atmosphere; gritty graphics, voice-acting; gameplay & storyline; sidequests - lots of interesting content! - kept me involved right to the end...and again.
Two remarks: I like voice-acting all the way thru, and I believe the tactical elements could use a little improvement.
Nevertheless five stars: too good to bother with minor issues...
