The great turn-based strategy classic

The Warlords III is the great turn-based strategy classic. The game focuses on strategic level where you manage your unit productions in cities, form strong army stacks, and send them to conquer new cities. It is reasonably easy to get into, but has plenty of depth with high variety of units and different bonuses, which can strengthen your armies and weaken your enemies. Various different heroes can lead armies, explore ruins, and do quests for acquiring additional abilities, useful items, and very powerful special units. Battles themselves are completely automated, which in turn allows game to keep at reasonable pace even then your empire grows very large and you have numerous of armies marching around. The game includes multiple campaigns, numerous stand-alone scenarios, and a very solid random map generation function. Additionally, some fan made scenarios can be found on the old Warlorders.com fansite. The Darklords Rising expansion includes also all the content of the original Reign of Heroes. It should be noted that this is the version 1.02, some unit balance is slightly different from what some people may remember from their original CD version. Works completely fine for me on Windows 10. It does give a nonsensical low disk space warning at start-up, but that little bug can be safely ignored. I have very fond memories of playing Warlords III in both single player and in hotseat multiplayer. Was waiting for it to appear on GOG for a long time, it is great that it finally reached here!

Incredible Retro game

This game was one of the first I ever played on a modern PC. This was the first time I discovered how much the RPG elements combined with Turn-based would captivate me. I have well over 1000 hours logged between the Total War, Civilization, and AoE series and this game was the progenitor of that. Warlords III: Reign of Heroes specifically captivated my imagination. A great deal of what those aforementioned games rely on to hook the player and add depth and a sense of adventure to an other-wise simple board with time-independent decision flow came about in Warlords III. Discovering ruins, adding to a hero's might, and coming up across named and flavor text enhanced world events and locations is a huge part of this game. I highly recommend this to anyone!

Classic and forgotten

I smashed so many hours into Warlords 1 when I was a kid. Then a Friend got his hands on Warlords 2 and 2 player hot seat just made it even more amazing. Sadly I never really had the chance to play Warlords 3 but thanks to GOG I am revisiting one of the game series that defined gaming in my early years. Also I love that every edition of this game they included the original Map, Illuria, from Warlords 1.

Classic!

A gem of a game and probably the pinnacle of the Warlords series before it all went downhill when they switched to the RTS genre. An incredible amount of customization makes this game addictive even though the AI isn't very challenging, but from time to time it can put up a bit of a fight. Definitely a "just one more turn" game that will eat away at your time.

This game is a treasure for fans of turn-based strategy

It's hard not to gush nostalgically about all the fun this game gave me back in the late 90s. but this review shouldn't be about those times, it should be about the game as it stands today. Thankfully the game lives up to its memories. it runs great, it's a fat-free turn-based strategy game where building stacks of doom to trample the enemy is as important to your success as rapid expansion, deft decision making, and thoughtful surgical strikes. This game features a variety of heroes & races, and nearly 100 units to compose your armies from, each with their own strengths and specialties. Combat boils down to pitting your stack of units vs the enemy's, and seeing which stack reigns supreme. The strategic layer of this game sees the player managing defense upgrades, unit production, hiring heroes, and buying the occasional trinket or spell from travelling merchants. There are treasure sites to visit where loot or allies might be found, and even quests your heroes might undertake to earn a extra money, trinkets, spells, or units. Although turn-based, this game has trimmed much of the fat that that keeps players of other strategy games constantly hitting end-turn turn after turn waiting for something to happen, be it research or production related. Every turn in this game counts. And every turn gives you something to do. You'll never have a reason to mash the end turn button over and over unless your plan is to lose. There are several campaigns included in this release, as well as built-in multiplayer for skirmishing with friends.
