First, this is not Diablo, it does not try to be Diablo.
This is a decent hack n slasher with pretty good graphics and a cool storyline.
Maybe not worth full price, but definitely worth it if you can find it for 25% off or better!!
At the time of this review I have 20+ hours into the game. I bought the Slayer Edition.Like the title says, I don't think this game is as bad as a lot of the other reviewers say. Is this game worth full price? No. Is it worth a sale price? Yes.
To start, this game has full controller support which is a plus to me and possibly other's with disabilities that make mouse and keyboard hard to use. The menu's in game are just like Diablo 3.
The Story is the meat of this game. If you like Warhammer Fantasy, this is worth giving a try. If you don't like Warhammer you would probably want to skip this. I enjoyed the main story and the Tomb Kings DLC. It's not very deep of a story but it was fun to go through.
Melee combat and difficulty is where this game shows its problems. I played throug as the Witch Hunter who is both ranged and melee. I started out switching between them on the fly as is the class mechanic. However, after act 1 I realized that it's not worth my time to use melee as the enemies run around trying to avoid you and the game is much easier as ranged. The other big issue was that once you get past act 1 you will out gear the hardest difficulty level that you can access(Very Hard), but you cannot get to the higher ones until you finish the story. So the rest of the game is trivial. Bosses are not hard at all and can be killed with a few hits. Another thing that bothered me was being insta-killed. This happened to me every so often even when I out leveled the content. It's like a random glitch or something.
I would like to say more but I'm running out of space. I'll try to summarize quickly. There is an end game system that is honestly kind of boring because for the Invasions you cannot select the difficulty and its very easy for more than half of them. Tower of Chaos is a pain. Relic hunt is were you get your gear upgrades.
Overall it has a ok story, nice looking and feeling zones, but is too easy until end game and you might be bored by then.
This is a great game. It's actually the most fun that I had with an ARPG game. I particularly love three things:
1. I can play couch co-op with my girlfriend.
2. It has epic boss fights.
3. I can play with controller and not a mouse.
It also has a good story, good voice acting and good graphics. blizzard should learn a thing or two from this game about how to make a good Diablo game again.
This is a weirdly bad game. It would have been so easy to make it good, but they didn't.
1. There is no lore in this game. No one to talk to, no notes to find, enemies (aside from some uniques) don't even have names.
2. It's completely imbalanced. I played on normal for a while, then switched to very hard. Last boss of original campaign died in two minutes, I didn't even need potions. Same with skills - some are clearly more useful than others. If i have to choose between two traps, one with cooldown and can only be placed once or one i can spam as much as i want, but with slightly smaller damage, it's just not a hard choice to make.
3. Game is short and repetitive. So are the dungeons you have to run. There are no secrets, no side paths nor nothing. Just run forward killing on ignoring everything.
4. Bugs. I started the game, played for a while, but next time my save was gone. Turns out game created second save folder and would choose which to load randomly. I completed main campaign this way, but when i started desert campaign game refused to recognize save. Gave me save corrupted error. 30 hours gone, just like that.
Warhammer: Chaosbane (Slayer edition) is a well crafted experience with some shortfalls here and there.
Gameplay: 3.5/5
The gameplay is enjoyable in my opinion and the classes feel well made however the map design is quite boring which sadly drags everything else down.
There's very little variety in terms of level design and once you've played 1-2 dungeons in a given zone you've basically seen it all. They feel almost identical and they're mostly linear and contrived consisting of long narrow paths- there's no sense of openess. Also the enemy types aren't varied or interesting enough in my opinion.
There are some bugs here and there like passive skills not providing the listed bonuses things like that, nothing major but still annoying at times. The endgame content is decent in terms of variety and there are quite a few difficulty options.
As far as character builds go there's a good selection of skills and passives you can choose depending on how you want to play. Gearing is okay I suppose. I think there's 3 heroic sets for each class which support different playstyles and the other gear is just randomly generated stuff and not that interesting. Don't expect Grim Dawn or Diablo II levels of depth. This is more laid-back and casual.
Story: 3/5
The story is okay, nothing groundbreaking. It didn't get me emotionally invested though.
Visuals: 4/5
The visuals are quite nice and the game is mostly well optimised from my experience.
Audio: 3.5/5
The music is solid but I feel like there are too few tracks overall- it gets a bit stale quickly. There's also barely any ambient noise
The dialogue is well voice acted but sometimes quite cringe in terms of how the villians speak.
