In the Dark Future, Power is everything
I held off on writing this review until after I completed a playthrough. Rogue Trader is the first Owlcat game that I have played, although I've been a fan of isometric RPGs going back to Ultima and the Gold Box classics. Rogue Trader takes a different route than most other RPGs where instead of starting out as a lowly adventurer, you're a person with a career before the game and you're soon thrust into the role of one of the four most people in the Expanse. This viewpoint from the role of a ruler, and the way that the story flows and works around that perspective gives Rogue Trader a unique feel, even as the glorious mesh of influences and inspirations of the 40K universe give you a different experience than the usual 'There is only war' narrative. And that is for the stronger, as you get to explore the people, cultures and worlds of the setting, and leave your mark. Playing it on Normal, the combat wasn't the most challenging (it helps that my build was sensible) but the harder ones can wait for another playthrough. The differences in the three ideologies and the outcomes of following them lead me to want to replay this already massive game again to see how the different paths end. I would definitely make some different decisions on another playthrough, given the outcomes of choices, as well as give different fates to various characters than the ones they had. The only thing that I didn't enjoy was the ending slides, as from my choices through the game, there were a fair amount of more bitter than sweet to the finale. Still, I can greatly recommend to fans of roleplaying games that are more than hack and slash, as well as those that enjoy the Lore of the Warhammer 40K universe. Other reviews may mention how buggy it was at launch, but playing it now it feels really solid and I didn't have any notable bugs. There was some minor slowdown in the last dungeon of the game, but giving the visual scope and scale, I can give it a pass there.

Tremendous! My best risky purchase ever.
While hardly perfect, “Rogue Trader” is the biggest RPG adventure I’ve ever been on, and it deserves to stand out much more than it does among the countless mediocre Warhammer 40K games. I heard about it from Mortismal on Youtube. I was apprehensive due to the generic marketing is and the fact that “rogue trader” sounds like it’s about the stock market. It turns out that Rogue Trader is a TREMENDOUS, mostly good, mostly traditional, party-based RPG set on the fringes of the Warhammer 40k universe. It is not the best game I’ve ever played, and it has “double-A” production values, but I do feel it has offered me more than any other game I’ve ever purchased. I just finished the campaign, which entertained me for 183 hours over the course of several months. I think it deserves to be purchased at full price. (I bought it on sale.) The good: -Very big game, and most of it is good. -Variety of gameplay. There are turn-based space battles, colonies to manage, text-based encounters… -Good for people who like to read. Excellent writing and characters. -Each of the 5 “chapters” really shakes things up; you’re not doing the same thing for 180 hours. (Not everyone will like this). -Countless narrative decisions & consequences that really enhance role-playing the “rogue trader.” -X-Com-like turn-based combat is fun and addictive (but not as robust as X-Com). -Many clever refinements to traditional CRPG mechanics. It’s complex, but it’s easier to understand than older games. The bad: -Inconsistent difficulty. Most of the game is too easy, even on harder difficulty settings, but several specific enemies/fights are MUCH harder. -I personally think “skill checks” are not a fun RPG mechanic, and they are ubiquitous. -Story is kind of a mess (but writing and characters are very good and will stick with you). -Leveling up can take forever (e.g. 20 minutes) due to literally dozens of perks/abilities to choose from for each characters at every level. -In-engine cutscenes are primitive.

Triumphant and Expansive
Much improved since last year; void shadows is wild and fun, and the base game is no longer bogged down in technical issues or loading states. There remains a rushed final act, but I have not encountered a class system so granular and modular; at time of writing, this is also the only time owlcat has developed a FUN mandatory minigame in ship combat. It used to be buggy and terrible, but has since improved such that I wish it had its own developed game on top. Last year I loved this game despite; 200 hours later, and following patch 1.3, I love it true and wholly, and look forward to what next steps there could be.

From Chapter 4 onwards...
...the game is more bugs than gameplay .Since the state of RT is only acceptable in three out of five acts, I give it three stars out of five.
