Discover the grim dark universes of Warhammer where there is only war. From Warhammer 40,000 to Warhammer Fantasy and more - discover it all on GOG Warhammer Franchise page.

Gladius Prime was known to Imperial scholars as a planet of archeological interest. During its colonization ancient relics were found, revealing hints of a shrouded past. But it was more than relics. Something awakened, an unspeakable horror from an ancient past, and the citizens of Gladius found themselves trapped in a terrible war for survival.

Gladius Prime was once a planet of peace. Now there is only war.

Warhammer 40,000: Gladius – Relics of War brings you to a world of terror and violence. Four factions will engage in a brutal war for dominance over the planet’s resources.

In the first 4X turn-based strategy game set in Warhammer 40,000 you will lead one of four factions: Astra Militarum, Space Marines, Orks and Necrons, each with their own unique gameplay, technological tree, units and heroes.

Face a challenging AI or cooperate or compete with friends and strangers across the globe. Play as one of four iconic Warhammer factions (Astra Militarum, Space Marines, Orks or Necrons), each with their own unique playstyle and technology tree. Explore a randomly generated world filled with special features and threatening wildlife that can crush your troop's morale. Secure control of powerful ancient artefacts to grant you an edge against rival factions. Construct cities, buildings and fortifications to expand your empire and produce an army to vanquish your foes. Harvest resources and research new technologies to fuel and upgrade your machinery of war. Progress through a different storyline with each faction as their destiny on Gladius Prime, a world tainted by the warp, unfolds. In the end, when all the dust has settled, only one faction can emerge victorious. Command a wide array of devastating weaponry, issue city edicts and deploy tactical operations. Recruit hero units that possess distinct special abilities and can be equipped with items, ranging from advanced grenades to mighty relics of the past. As they become more and more powerful with each rank, they turn into true champions of your cause.

Good within its scope

I find it most useful to consider this game against its ambitions, not directly compared to titans of the 4X genre. It feels like a fun, if clunky, turn-based strategy more than a 4X. Its strengths are the Warhammer 40k vibe, the clean progression through the early and middle parts of a game, and the compulsive "one more turn" motivation that is the bane of a full night's sleep. It's not as rich in the simulation or world depth as, say, an Endless Legend, which is why I think comparing it to a 4X does it no favors. Age of Wonders (any of the the recent ones, but we'll generously say III) might be a good comparison, except the combat on those games is more tactical and interesting. Still, if you want to simulate fielding an endless supply of troops for a grinding campaign as you slog across the map, this is your game. The late game can grow tedious: slowly marching each unit in an army of dozens across terrain, forcing the front line forward through pressure and casualities alone. In short, it's perhaps the best 40k campaign simulation out there. In the grim darkness etc etc, there is only kind of a slog.

Combat focused 4X - of course it is...

This is a 4X game which is very focused on military strength, and where society-related factors play less than second fiddle. But this is obviously in line with the setting, and there are still quite challenging factors, even if they are few, to maintain in order to have your cities perform optimally. This is a solid 4X game in a universe where there is only war and how you engage in those wars, and leverage your factions strenghts, will determine how long your survive.

Overpriced

Got it for free, it lack content and the DLC are overpriced. Easy to figure why they would give away the base game, it's not a gift at all, it's an investment.

Much better than expected

As a decades-long fan of Warhammer 40,000, I have a tendency to buy a lot of games that use the licence. Unfortunately, most WH40k games are mediocre at best, and unpolished palette swaps of better games at worst. I'm happy to say that this game is neither. It's a surprisingly polished piece of entertainment that I expect to play for dozens of hours, maybe even hundreds of hours. I recommend this to WH40K fans and non-fans alike.
