Nothing beats the competitive feel of racing. Feel the thrill as you race past your opponent, slam their car into a water trap, and beat them by a bumper to the finish line. You won't want to finish because Wacky Wheels is too exciting: avoiding the obstacles, knocking against opponents, launching your weapons against them, beating them to the short cuts, engaging turbo mode on the straightaway, using your hand brake to skillfully hug tight corners without spinning out, and hitting jumps with perfect timing so that you sail above and past your opponents while executing a perfect 360 rotation in midair!
There are three classes of tracks to race on, from novice to expert, which present a wide range of wacky racing conditions. All tracks have special obstacles and dangers: water traps, cacti, oil slicks, posts, stacks of tires, and more. Some tracks are surrounded by water and even lava.
But what you're not expecting is the hedgehogs! Grab all the track-populated hedgehogs you can and hurl them like baseballs at the other racers to send them spinning out of control - giving you time to pass 'em by. Other weapons to collect include bombs, oil slicks, ice blocks, and flame balls.
From start to finish you get edge-of-your-seat excitement and action. When playing, you'll grit your teeth, lean your body into the corners and scream "EAT MAGMA!" as you launch a hedgehog that sends the racer in front of you spinning into the lava!
What can I say about this game that hasn't already been said? It's whacky. It's got wheels. It's now available for purchase, which to me I find ironic in that the game was originally freeware.
At any rate, the driving mechanics are excellent. The shooting is an all-time favorite of the kids. The levels are fabulously drawn. It's an all-around fantastic game.
Buy it.
I played the demo when I was a kid, had a good time, but in playing it again as an adult made me see how lacking this game is, just a shell of the game it's trying to mimmic.
I originally played the shareware version of this that came on my Duke Nukem 3D CD, back when that came out and I came back to it to try and complete the game.
The game is decent. Everything works as it is supposed to. The art style is pleasing and the music, although not abundant, has some real bangers. The only problem is that after playing a few races I noticed that all the tracks play very similarly and it has very little real variety.
The AI is of the rubber banding type so no matter how much you hit them with the weapons, they will be back on your tail in no time.
It has a nice range of difficulties, including a kid mode. I'm sure young kids would love this game as an entry into gaming as it is very forgiving and the bright animal characters are great. On the other end of the spectrum you have Champion difficulty which they made unfair to the player. I loved the Champion difficulty as I had to try some interesting stuff to win each set of races but still, I finished everything in less than 3 hours.
The only thing that caused me a very minor issue is that playing on the keyboard has a set up of arrows for turning, ctrl for firing, and alt for accelerating. Windows 10 has a shortcut of ctrl/alt/arrow for flipping the screen, which confused the heck out of me at first. After realising what was causing the screen flip, I used the numpad arrows instead which doesn't cause the problem.
All in all, it's fun for a short while but don't expect too much out of Wacky Wheels.
My dad had got this on floppy when I was about two it was the first game he introduced me to along side with Duke Nukem 3D and DOOM. Being able to play it again brings back so many memories at the time I was only into computer games i had never heard of Mario at the time so I did not know it was based off Mario kart but it was fun non the less even now 18 years later and I still say its worth playing even if its an old dos game and aimed more at kids.
I only had the shareware version of this game , but I played The wheels off of it. Pun Intended. This version I have tested from my windows install copied to debian linux. It works flawlessly in a debian dosbox install. I can only say it is awesome it works in both worlds. Winxp and linux. The frame rated is smooth. set up is perfect sound and controls are all perfect.
both windows and copied to linux install both perfom about the same. I have not tried the ubuntu installed version yet
