I played this game a few years ago and, since then, when thinking about game mechanichs I can't help but compare all the games i've played to this one. Apart going left or right you can basically do just one thing, that is - invert gravity. And it's mind blowing to see how much variety and challenge have been crafted around this single ability. The minimalistic graphics, the occasional text and the killer chiptune soundtrack contribute to make this game a pure gem.

VVVVVV has one simple gameplay mechanic: press a button to reverse gravity. There's no jumping, no attacking, no life meter, just falling up or falling down. What the game does with that one trick is nothing short of incredible. The level design in this game is pixel-perfect and rivals the best AAA platformers in terms of elegance and creativity. The art and music are both fantastic, as long as you're a fan of old-school Atari. If on;y every game exhibited this level of attention to detail.

Such an addictive platform game with a nice twist which is you can alter gravity with jump button. Nice 8 bit soundtrack and a c64 loading screen. Buy it.

You are an adorable smiley bitman whose spaceshift is sucked into a plane shift. You must return to your ship and save your crew- it's adorable it's fun, it's engaging. There are quite a few indie/non-AAA games of recent times that are just brilliant; the stanley parable, FTL, BitTrip Runner, Geometry Wars and VVVVVV. The brilliant thing that ties all of these games togeather is the focus on game mechanics and not aesthetics. VVVVVV takes Armor Games' Shift, swaps out the flash visuals for retro graphics, the shift key with the space bar, and chucks a nice non-linear story with many checkpoints and funny screen-names. This is a game that doesn't take too long to complete, but leaves a memorable imprint on you. Be prepared to die again, and again, and again! and then you work it out and nail that screen with a smile on your face!
