THE STORY

Viscerafest is a sci-fi fantasy single-player arena FPS where you take the role of Caroline, a bloodthirsty, psychopathic mercenary who wants nothing more than to marry her wonderful boyfriend, Athens Fetter. The problem is money's tight, and rings aren't exactly cheap. But thankfully, there may yet be hope for her, as a warlock named Cromune has acquired a rather hefty bounty on his head.

Bringing his corpse in to the respective authorities won't be an easy task however, as Cromune has a small army defending him. Forces from the U.S.C. (United Scientific Conglomerate) led by Dr Mortice stand shoulder to shoulder with the religious zealot. But what’s a few hundred soldiers to death incarnate? Nothing but a slaughter... Nay... A Viscerafest!

People have the wrong mindset.

Yes, the game takes inspiration from the Dooma, Wolf3Ds and other 90s fpa. Just because the hud looks Doom inspired doesn't mean that the game plays like Doom. The game was never meant to be just another Doom boomer fps, the developers always explained why the game has a low ammunition count and what their design principles are. Players should think of this game as a Hotline Miami in first person instead. You have to manage your limited resources in a world where precision and evasion are key. Also, finding at least a few secrets per level makes you able to play more gun heavy and I always had more ammo than needed and couldn't even pick up additional ammo. The game became really fun and engaging once I got the Doom mentality out of my head. I suggest you do the same and see the game as its own beast that doesn't need Doom and Duke to survive and be a great game!

Damn...

First and foremost i usually never buy in-developpment games but i already tried it before so i knew what i was into... And i also wanted to be the first to post a comment for my first comment on GOG The gameplay, the style, the difficulty, the music, the voice acting everything's done with a lot of care and it shows. There might be some polish here and there before it's release but it's nothing really game breaking. Let's be real at this price point it is way more entertaining and fun to play than most 60$/£/€ games. But be warned the game can be brutal on the medium to hardest difficulty and it makes the game even better. I'll eventually come back when the full blown release or within a month with probably the same outcome. Till then hats off to the devs, the artists and everyone involved in the developpement on the game.

An absolute gem

I bought this game on another platform, but felt the need to review it here as well. It's good. It's really good. I don't know why they aren't asking more for it. It's absolutely worth more than $15 USD by a long shot. If you enjoy the modern Doom games, Prodeus, Build engine games (especially Ion Fury), and bunny hopping, you'll freaking love this game!

These Are Some Talented Kids

I've been looking forward to this release. Like me, the two main developers of this game turned 21 this year. Unlike me, they actually have the drive and motivation to make a video game. Awesreek talked a lot about how far back Viscerafest's concept goes, and it's certainly come to fruition now. After having played the demo so many times, it's astounding that the new story content added to this chapter kept me interested. + Fast, smooth, Quake-like movement with tight air control + Caroline. Her voice actress sounds like she had fun with the role of a partly eldritch, sadomasochistic merc with a wholesome motivation. Fun stuff. + Striking color palette and nice pixel graphics. I think the sprite quality's actually improved from the demos to now. + The boss of this chapter's a fun challenge. It's good about teaching the player its patterns, such that death is the player's fault. + The standard combat is meticulously designed so any death is the player's fault, anyway. One has to get frantic with the movement, pick weaker targets to melee for a quick health pickup (the only means of getting health, here), and miss little or no shots. I found myself doing quick swaps between weapons alá Doom Eternal. + Speaking of the weapons, I think they do the job well; namely, having each weapon be more suitably effective for different baddies. The dual-wielded Shredders and Bunker Buster gib small targets, while the humorously-named Pung Cannon is good for large ones. The most powerful weapons so far, the Deus Mortis Super Shotgun and Plague Rifle (my favorite) take out whole groups, as they should. + Markie's music in this game is driving, pulsing, and some of the best I heard from him. The Slipgate Complex theme is probably my favorite. This's just the first chapter, and not only do I commend the artists, actors, and composer for its presentation, but the devs as well for not pulling their punches. This game's made their way. What comes next will be great, I know it.

Breach and clear.

It's like FPS Hotline Miami, but you can take a couple of punches, maybe. The idea is to John (or Jane, in this case) Wick your way through each stage and room without getting destroyed. You can punch really hard, and you should learn to abuse this as much as you can to preserve ammo for harder enemies. There's an enemy that exists to bait you into wasting ammo. Don't get baited. Dev: Give me the option to turn off the difficulty warning at the beginning, it's annoying.
