Story

Vestaria Saga tells the story of international conflict between a powerful empire and a small coastal kingdom. When an imperial ship is set ablaze near the port of Meleda, it sparks a cascade of events that thrusts young warrior Zadrian into a war for the future of his kingdom. On the run from a vicious imperial force and short on allies, Zade and his small band of knights must make difficult decisions to ensure that Meleda's princess, and the very future of its lineage, remain intact.

However, not everything is as it seems, and forces in the dark corners of the continent conspire. The stage is set, and the pieces have begun to move.
Gameplay
Vestaria Saga is a strategy RPG where positioning, movement, and even weaponry, are paramount to success. Move your heavily armed units around a classically styled grid-based map and engage pirates, rebels, monsters, imperial soldiers, and anyone else that stands in your way.

F4 for full screen

This game is very similar to the earlier fire emblem titles due to being produced by fire emblems original creator Shōzō Kaga, who left early into the series longlasting lifetime. While it might lack some of the polish of the newer fire emblem titles, it also lacks the fanservice and dating aspects of the post GBA titles, focusing instead on a more political and (arguably) classical fire emblem story. There is also no self-insert or playermade avatar. You can save at the start of every 5th turn, which you will want to utilize since the maps tend to have some plot twists along the way, which might catch you offguard. There are also several secrets and special interactions to discover, so you might need a guide if you don't want to miss anything on your first playthrough. While my controller works somehow, I've found that the setup using keyboard and mouse plays surprisingly well. If you feel that the newer fire emblem titles lost some of the fun of the earlier titles during their recent evolution, you might find some of the missing spark in this game. That being said, the game has a fair difficulty (just as the old titles), so you shouldn't expect an easy ride.

Rough and punishing

I sorely wanted to like Vestaria Saga, kept an eye on it pre-launch and picked it up when I saw an opportunity. I'm an old veteran of the Fire Emblem series, having played the untranslated SNES iterations in my youth after seeing Marth/Roy in SSB Melee, so I thought Vestaria Saga would be right up my alley, a return to the series roots and away from the Waifu Emblem of recent entries. Unfortunately, it was a letdown. Vestaria Saga is less a Fire Emblem and more a Puzzle Emblem; most of the challenge of conquering a map is figuring out how to deal with troublesome, well-positioned enemies wielding powerful weapons. Think FE4, but with every map having at least one holy weapon wielder that you have to defeat. This is challenging and rewarding when you succeed, but it doesn't take very long for it to become grueling and frustrating, brought down even more by the limited save feature (a lot can happen in 5 turns) and the unforgiving nature of the game and its RNG. Vestaria Saga will challenge you, and you will fail. You could end up reloading the same save many times, replaying the same 1-5 turns leading up to the point where you fail (occasionally having to replay THOSE due to less favourable RNG outcomes), trying to change the result until you are victorious. Eventually, it stops being about your units, their quirks and strengths and weaknesses, instead turning into save-scumming, math, and statistics (This enemy unit hits four times for 20 damage at 80% accuracy and my closest guy has 10 defense so he would take a max of 40 etc etc.). This can be satisfying to overcome... but it constantly limits your options and lacks the freedom of the games it is supposed to harken to. The SRPG Studio engine also does not do this game justice. They did their best with it, but it's clunky and a little ugly and brings the game's presentation and QoL down a bit. I'm sad the game fell so flat for me, but it has enough positive qualities that others may enjoy it where I didn't.

Great for what it is

This is an industry legend's interpretation of where the genre/series he created would have gone if he had stayed in the industry longer and other developers hadn't taken over. It shows a lot of creativity and effort. At the same time, it is an indie title produced with volunteers and commercially available game development suites. If you have patience for minor quality of life and love Fire Emblem, then you'll love this.

Masterpiece draped in autumn leaves.

This is a six star game that I put four on as an olive branch to modern gamers. There are comical flaws here. A few turns in you may try to hit escape to see a menu and boom - your sitting on your desktop with any progress erased, having to reboot your way back into the game. There are plenty of things of this nature, but they won't be what stick with you once pressing forward into the experience. What we have here is the man who created one of Nintendos most endearing sagas, rising from the ashes in a comeplete indy format backed by volunteers to thrust his vision through the dark clouds of corporate gaming (which has taken him to court for his attempts). Give this game a chance if anything of this genre interests you. The music, the story, the characters. This is true art, fighting it's way from from the depths.

Great Tatic better than Fire Emblem

Things about this game: * It was made by the Fire Emblem father * The history is pretty good and complex * All chapters have secrets and details - most of the important ones are to help beat the chapter in case you get stuck * You can save every 5 turns - RNG abuse this for growth * It is much harder than FF
