To become death in Venetica is a calling, fulfilled by a man of flesh and blood – equipped with special supernatural skills in order to be able to carry out the duties of the office. A new death is selected regularly by “Corpus”, a secret council. This time however Corpus really makes a wrong decision: The “new” death, Victor, turns out to be a crazed necromancer who manages to turn himself into an overpowering undead with seedy tricks and dark rituals and thus attains almost unlimited power in addition to immortality. As it is strictly forbidden for the chosen death to devote himself to necromancy, the committee revokes Victor’s nomination immediately and declares a new death in his stead without delay.

The power-hungry Victor however does not want to relinquish his position again. He continues to practice the dark arts in order to gather numerous dark and dangerous creatures and tainted souls from the underworld around him. He thus succeeds in eliminating the newly designated death and takes over his power for his own purposes. The effects on the world’s balance are calamitous and – should Victor be able to keep himself in power – its dark consequences are irreversible. Only a person who has the same mighty powers as Victor can prevent his prevailing and vent him his deserved punishment.

Scarlett, the daughter of the real death does not know anything about her ancestry and the hidden talents which slumber within her. She is immersed suddenly in this story due to the brutal attack on her home village and the tragic loss of Benedict, the love of her life. It is a story which she now begins to write herself, a story during the course of which she unleashes her capabilities, a story in which she tries to save Benedict from the world of the dead and a story in which she must protect the world of the living from the dark threat posed by Victor and his henchmen.

Has a lot of charm but also flaws

The game has a lot of charm with its setting and general feel. Voice acting is pretty good and story as well as combat is serviceable. The city itself is also very well designed and pretty. Unfortunately it's pretty buggy, I get its an older game but I tried looking up some fixes and there's old forum posts from back when the game launched mentioning how buggy it was. I got frequent crashes and world areas not loading when I went into them, just a blank black map. Quests are generally ok, but there's a lot of backtracking at certain points which can take a long time since there's no sprinting. I got it on sale so I'm not completely unhappy with the game, but between crashes and the mandatory backtracking I'm not going to finish it. If you get it on discount the game world is charming enough for try if you like these kind of action rpgs.

Dated, but somewhat entertaining

As of 2022 this game is obviously dated, but this game has downsides and upsides to it. I will just lay those out for you and you can decide wether you want to spent time with it. I certainly enjoy the experience but it may not be for you. The combat system isn't as intricate as Dark Souls or even God of War. It is playable though and it is easy to pick up. Don't expect fights to feel supersmooth but don't expect them to be a tremendous amount of work as well. The story is tolerable. There's a lot of inconsistencies, often within the same dialog, but overall it is not the worst und uninteresting thing I have ever played. If you can get over relatively weak dialog or the occasional sexist trope then it is playable. If I had to give you one example of inconsistency its probably that the main character is a woman whose only goal it seems to be to be married to a knight in shining armor. Which is of course the goal of all women in life. And even after she is a person of her own she will still be dependant on that male figure - which is kind of ridiculous because it doesn't work for a hero character to be this dependant on an npc. The graphics are fine but on my PC bright colors are glowing horribly. Overall it cannot stand up to modern games at all, but if you are into old graphics they work out fine. I have certainly seen games that aged worse. The textures and models are consistent. Sounds are just like the graphics tolerable and yet a little off sometimes. What you get is a playable game that is easy to pick up. It has certain RPG Elements, like distributing character stats and skills, you can loot and pick different weapons, there are dialog choices which rarely have real impact, the fighting is Dark Souls lite, the story is keeping you somewhat interested and there are quite some puzzles which I found rather refreshing. I've always loved the Uncharted, Lara Croft pace of fighting and then doing some puzzling. 4or5/5 when it came out, 3/5 because it aged
