Description
Vampire: The Masquerade - Coteries of New York is a narrative experience set in the rich universe of Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition. It presents the struggle for power between two vampiric factions - the Camarilla and the Anarchs - bathed in the night lights of the Big Apple.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Coteries of New York presents the conflict between two vampiric factions: the traditionalist Camarilla and the fiercely independent Anarchs among the landmarks and night lights of the Big Apple. It's a unique, atmospheric, single-player narrative experience, set in the rich universe of Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition.

  • Choose one of three pre-defined characters and play as a Ventrue, Toreador or Brujah
  • Each playable character offers a selection of powers (Disciplines), different ethical approaches to certain issues, and unique dialogue lines
  • Character-oriented quests allow you to meet four unique non-playable characters: a Tremere sorcerer, a Nosferatu detective, a Gangrel of conflicted loyalties and a Malkavian multifoliate online personality with their own agendas. Win their hearts and minds and up to two of them will assist you in the finale
  • Depending on your choice of the Clan you will be able to see the events from a distinct perspective. One playthrough is not enough to see all the game has to offer!
  • Different paths leading to a grand finale that will leave you surprised and eager to see more
  • Suitable for both Vampire: The Masquerade veterans, and fans of mature narrative-driven games who are newcomers to the setting

The game does justice to the mature themes of the World of Darkness, and takes advantage of the excellent atmosphere of the source material.

What is Vampire: The Masquerade – Coteries of New York?

Vampire: The Masquerade - Coteries of New York aims to translate the complex and fascinating world of vampires, their nightly struggles for power and attempts to hold on to their humanity.

How do you play Coteries of New York

You act as a newly-fledged vampire in New York. You have to learn what it means to be one of the Kindred in a huge, vibrant, contemporary metropolis. On your way you’ll meet different NPCs – other vampires, thin-bloods, ghouls, humans... and more. You will perform tasks that will put test your humanity and take part in a complex and often brutal struggle for power between the Camarilla and the Anarchs. You’ll interact with key NPCs - form unique bonds and relations and learn your undead companions’ deepest secrets... or see them abandon you. You’ll feast on the living and will ask yourself about the very nature of humanity. You will have to keep track of your Hunger or the Beast inside you will take over. You will make choices for the character, including which storylines to pursue and how to approach the different situations presented. You will take part in a narrative experience with branching dialogue choices, memorable characters - all among iconic locales of the Big Apple. You will be able to use Disciplines that will help you in combat and conversations, but be aware that every use of a Discipline may increase the level of your Hunger. Left unchecked, your Hunger will force you to give control over to the Beast: a dark side of your nature which wishes only to feed... no matter the cost.

If it’s called Vampire: The Masquerade, does that mean you have something in common with World of Darkness, Bloodlines 2, the cult tabletop RPG system, or...?

Yes, exactly! Coteries of New York is set in the same universe as Bloodlines 2, but our game offers different experiences and stories.

Do you plan to expand the universe of Coteries of New York

As for post-launch support, we’ll keep you updated. We would love to expand Coteries’ stories, but it depends on many factors and we do not want to over promise anything.

Which platforms will Coteries of New York be available on?

Coteries of New York is available on PC (Windows, Mac OS and Linux). The game will launch on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in Q1 2020.

Does the game support controllers?

Yes! You’re able to play the PC version both with mouse and keyboard, as well as with a controller.

A very trunkated VN

When compared to other visual novels, this is a very linear game, and harly any choices matter. What killed it for me was causing a scene in front of an NPC's house, getting scolded by him, and then two paragraphs later your companion commends it for being discreet. Or was it the moment when there's an opportunity to sacrifice your companion for personal gain buy looking away, there's a prompt to "calmly look around" and if you choose it - you magically overcome your opponent in a fight. Yeah, the latter. Recrouting your coterie, which I looked forward to, is simply doing side quests and having the companions make a token appearance toward the end. They do not seem to inflence any other events. The stories themselves are overall fine. Very millenial in their writing, that is to say they already look like they didn't age well. Music and pictures are nice. In the end, I can only recommend buying it at a discount. VTM:Bloodlines is still the game to go to, if you are looking for a more interactive vampire story.

5th Edition Universe - Stay clear

For long-time fans of VtM, be aware that this is set in the new 5e (gWoD) universe, not the pre-5e universe (oWoD). It's awful.

Great intro, if a little half-baked

Coteries of New York is a very faithful love letter to the series. It delves deep into the world of Kindred politics, so the writer(s) clearly did their homework. It goes into all kinds of elaborate details on their positions and politics that Bloodlines only touched on, so if you love Cainite political machinations, this is the game for you. They also did a great job on the characters. From the Sheriff to the Harpy to even the fan-service cameos like Aisling Sturbridge(I see you, Regentia), each is well fleshed out and has a great personality and distinct, flavorful artwork. The problems, of course, is that the team couldn't quite take the ball and run with it. Most of the plots involve little to no agency with the protagonist(expect a lot of "but thou must!"s or being railroaded into outcomes), come screeching abruptly to a halt, or leave the more intriguing NPCs out of the picture. If you can excuse that, though, this is still a fantastically written game, and shows a lot of potential if the team ever get another shot at it, or maybe plan on finishing Coteries with an expansion or continued stories down the line. There is massive potential here, it just needs to be built upon. (The devs' lack of communication over social media doesn't leave me optimistic, but I hope to be proven wrong.)

Could been much more

This was a impulse purchase while waiting for the next Bloodlines game and it did kill some time I suppose. The premise is not too far off from the original Bloodlines I suppose and there are some tie ins with it but the game play itself can get repetitive and story doesn't seem to change much each run through, I ended up fast forwarding just to get to different branches or achievements. With more game play options this could turned into a better more involved game but did come across as a stopgap for Vampire based games while the real things are being worked on. It might been nice for some sort of real development of the Coteries, missions or RPG type of system to give the game something to aim for beyond a quick dabble to get to the end for them achievements?

An enjoyable visual novel

A lot of people seem to give the game one star because it's a visual novel while they wanted Bloodlines 1.5 - You have my pity. On the game proper, I really enjoyed it despite its narrative and technical shortcomings: -The sound tends to cut off inexplicably, and there's no option to go back if you missclicked. -The actual coterie doesn't really factor into the game, and some of the story chapters are pretty disappointing -The ending does come a bit out of left field, but the sequence had me on the edge of my seat. Still, as a package I enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm not usually into VNs, so it's always a nice surprise to find a non-kinetic one. I would compare it to Solstice or NeoCab in that regard (Both fun games if you enjoyed this one)
