Description
In UNDERTALE you play as a human child who falls underground into the world of monsters. Now you must find your way out... or stay trapped forever.

Welcome to UNDERTALE, an RPG game where you don't have to kill anyone. Each enemy can be "defeated" nonviolently. Dance with a slime. Pet a dog. Whisper your favorite secret to a knight.
Or, ignore this choice and rain destruction upon your foes.
But your journey will take determination. Each adversary has unique bullet patterns that you must dodge as well (don't worry, it's not that hard).
  • Killing is unnecessary: negotiate out of danger using the unique battle system.
  • Time your attacks for extra damage, then dodge enemy attacks in a style reminiscent of top-down shooters.
  • Soulful, character-rich story with an emphasis on humor.
  • Created mostly by one person.
  • Become friends with all of the bosses!
  • At least 5 dogs.

Can we look at it realistically?

I admit it: this game has some special appeal underneath that's almost impossible for me to quantify. I absolutely understand when people say they love the game. I understand why it made top positions in best games lists. I understand why for some people it's the best game ever. I can't really say why it is - despite the fact that I can usually take apart everything and describe it. Undertale somehow defies my attempts. There's something about it, the child-like curiosity, the music that simply fits perfectly, and the humor and characters, even if you didn't like them at first (like me), grow on you over time. It's very rare that a game does that to this level and it shows how much love was poured into it. At the same time, there are areas where the game falls flat. The graphics for one - well it's just so plain ugly it truly takes away from that appeal. I'm not a graphics fanatic, not by a long shot, but the main character looks more like E.T. than a human child and it's seriously distracting up to the end. Everything is just so horribly ugly, and not in any kind of artistic or artsy way, just amateurish and ugly. Seriously dude, hire an artist! There isn't even that much art in the game, someone decent should have it restyled in a week and it would do wonders. I'm also not very sold on most of the mechanics. Such as the combat and the surrounding RPG elements. Like technically you can skip most of the combat, know the characters better etc. etc., but due to the ugly graphics I really didn't feel anything for the monsters. And the RPG mechanics are way too old-school to provide any obvious alternative choices. So at the end whenever I encountered a monster, I became frustrated and just opted to kill it as quickly as possible because neither sort of interaction is much fun. Later I saved a few monsters but I didn't find it as rewarding as some people say. Since I'm out of space, overall - a great game in its own way but would really need some more polishing.

Wonderful Game With Subpar Gameplay

[Personal Rating] Story: 9/10 Characters: 10/10 Graphics: 10/10 Music: 100/10 Gameplay: 6.5/10 Overall: 6/10 or 3.5 stars. Too bad I couldn't give half a star [The positives] Undertale is a good game. It has an interesting story that is both heartwarming and dark in some ways, a creative set of mechanisms, well-written and memorable characters, as well as marvelous music. Apart from that, the game's story leaves a lot of room for fan speculation, which is a good thing for fan artists. It might as well be one of the most influential (if not one of the best) indie games ever made. Most people wouldn't have much to argue with these points. [The negatives] Now, here are the nastier parts, because nothing is sunshine and rainbows 100% of the time. First, the battle system outside the Genocide Route is...... somewhat bland and unchallenging as the game goes further. And since I'm someone who likes the characters som much that I don't ever want to go on GE, you can clearly see how pissed I was about that. Second, the game's central value of pacifism isn't executed well in terms of gameplay. Finding out what to do to spare a monster relies mostly on guessing, and after you know, love and peace becomes a chore which, to be honest, is quite boring. Thanks to these issues, the game has little replay value as well, especially if you've finished all the routes. Negatives in a nutshell: good ideas, subpar execution, and no replay value. [Summing Up] How is Undertale? It is wonderful in almost every aspect -- it just is't fun enough to play as a game. Of course, if you're someone who bought it to enjoy the story, it wouldn't be a problem. I hope that Deltarune can be better. [Dissing Other Reviewers] The UT fandom being "toxic" is not a legitimate reason for giving UT a low rating. Remember: "Your review should focus on your in-game experience only. Let the game stand entirely on its own merits." - GOG Review Guidelines, in case you never read it.

Emotional journey

Undertale is a deceivingly simple-looking game that starts as a simple dungeon crawler but quickly becomes an emotional rollercoaster and the puzzles gradually growing in complexity, drawing you into its world with every step. Controls are very simple but that doesn't mean mastering it will be easy! The charater writing is phenomenal and the music is exceptional, it elicited emotional reactions from me I did not know I was capable of. The fact that you can complete it as a pure pacifist is a huge bonus. On the journey that you take, through the choices that you make, we hope you'll be good... please, be good.

Overrated

People talk about this game like it's the second coming of Christ. I played on release and aside from some very good music there really isn't anything on offer that's different from the typical RPG-maker style fare. Inside you'll find some incredibly obvious twists, labyrinthine world-building, super cringeworthy edgelord type stuff and one of the final bosses literally closes out the game each time you get hit (in a bullet-hell segment) THATS FUN RIGHT? It's just alright. Nothing special imo, but this kind of opinion invites every neckbeard with a Sans icon to debate your taste in games. Play something like Off, Witches House, Yume Niki, Ib ,etc etc instwad

Dont let the sprites fool you

Undertale is perhaps one of the best surprises to pop out of the gaming scene, and manages to remain so well after you see a few screens of the game. In fact, it will keep you happily guessing what is going to happen next, as well as perhaps even what the hell just happened. This game really is simply a joy to play, and if you are a fan of console-style RPGs, but looking for something genuinely new, look no further. Undertale is that something new dressed up in VERY old-style graphics. And while it’s extremely short for an RPG, it’s also so cheap that I find it hard to believe anyone will complain.
