Can we look at it realistically?
I admit it: this game has some special appeal underneath that's almost impossible for me to quantify. I absolutely understand when people say they love the game. I understand why it made top positions in best games lists. I understand why for some people it's the best game ever. I can't really say why it is - despite the fact that I can usually take apart everything and describe it. Undertale somehow defies my attempts. There's something about it, the child-like curiosity, the music that simply fits perfectly, and the humor and characters, even if you didn't like them at first (like me), grow on you over time. It's very rare that a game does that to this level and it shows how much love was poured into it. At the same time, there are areas where the game falls flat. The graphics for one - well it's just so plain ugly it truly takes away from that appeal. I'm not a graphics fanatic, not by a long shot, but the main character looks more like E.T. than a human child and it's seriously distracting up to the end. Everything is just so horribly ugly, and not in any kind of artistic or artsy way, just amateurish and ugly. Seriously dude, hire an artist! There isn't even that much art in the game, someone decent should have it restyled in a week and it would do wonders. I'm also not very sold on most of the mechanics. Such as the combat and the surrounding RPG elements. Like technically you can skip most of the combat, know the characters better etc. etc., but due to the ugly graphics I really didn't feel anything for the monsters. And the RPG mechanics are way too old-school to provide any obvious alternative choices. So at the end whenever I encountered a monster, I became frustrated and just opted to kill it as quickly as possible because neither sort of interaction is much fun. Later I saved a few monsters but I didn't find it as rewarding as some people say. Since I'm out of space, overall - a great game in its own way but would really need some more polishing.
