UnderRail: Expedition

Underrail is the cream of the crop as far as "Fallout revival" style games. More than that, it deserves a place among the top 5 CRPGs of the last decade. Underrail was a labor of love by its developers and it shows. This game draws you into its world with its style, its music and its atmosphere. The world of Underrail is vast--even more so with this expansion--it is vibrant, diverse and ripe for exploration. If you explore the deepest recesses of the caverns you will find remote unspoiled wonders that make you feel that you're surely the first person to ever set foot there. It also deserves praise for its interesting and well-developed characters, its surprisingly deep lore, the great range of character customization and skills available, and its elaborate crafting system. Since this has been on the GOG front page for a while, a lot of people are discovering Underrail for the first time. The original launch happened without any marketing at all and was practically invisible to anyone who hadn't read online discussion about it. If you missed it the first time around, don't wonder why you should buy an expansion to a game you don't own; Underrail is a treasure that every CRPG fan should experience.

Finally we have some backstory for underrail world without 'i wont tell you this' and 'you wont understand that' bs thats filled major dialogues in the main game. Music got better, writing got a bit better (Ferryman [int] checks are still what average people think smart people talk like, to put it bluntly). The new puzzle is nothing more than a chore if you are crazy on looting everything not screwed to the floor, but thank Ctulhu there is a solver for the puzzle. World is much more interesting, you have more interaction with people and you finally have motivation that original mainstory lacks. New guns, new locations, new mysteries, i will point out again new music is outstanding. To say more about content quality id say this should be the original games ending story. Its massive, it rewards you with knowledge and choice rather than just loot and big healthbar fight. I wont be surprised if people start playing this game, finish expedition before deep cavenrs descend and just end playthought there just because dlc outshines endgame so much. Tl;dr: totally worth your time and money, requires experienced character (level 15 or more, there is a stat checking quest character that wont let underleveled players get to dlc) but its a proper expantion you wont regret buying.

Adds a very detailed and engaging new region and some nice changes to the gameplay. Can't recommend this enough. Player freedom is also king here like it was in the basegame. You can join different factions, approach quests and maps differently (depending on your preferences and char built). The biggest highlights are the massive defensive battles against the natives and the stories you experience in this region (which sometimes also affects stuff in basegame maps). It just brings so much more to the table than only the Waterworld setting. You'll be surprised. Absolute nobrainer, instabuy. If you haven't touched UnderRail yet, I recommend playing it straight away in combination with the DLC as it adds A LOT to the basegame.

Bluntly, you need to enjoy the base game, because this delivers a whopping helping of more. It's not merely a couple of extra side missions or a handful of new maps either - it's a fairly dense, admittedly combat-heavy addition. Good news, if you liked the game lore and wanted more, this delivers in spades. A pacifist will have a hard time with this, though you gotta admit a pacifist wouldn't really have fun with the base game either. There ARE plenty of opportunities to sneak around if you go stealth (which I did), but if you want to fully explore the map there's no avoiding conflict. It is possible to attempt playing nice or at least make an effort to not go full murderhobo, but violence is a little more baked into this content than the base game, and considering how dominating that can already get, this is definitely no place to go in half-hearted or you'll find yourself getting zoned. Repeatedly. This also adds fast travel of a sort, after going through one rollercoaster of a side trip. It may not be to everyone's tastes, but I can say it was at least memorable, and -for me- a unique experience. The additional weapon types are okay. didn't feel pressured into changing to them. More feats is always nice. Overall this is a fairly solid release. Certainly can't complain content-wise, there's a lot of it. All that lore is also a great draw, if you liked the stuff in the base game (instead of merely skipping through it) then you'll definitely find something to hold your attention here. Two thumbs up, definitely recommended.
