The player takes control of one of the denizens of such a station-state whose life is about to become all that much more interesting and dangerous, as our protagonist is caught midst the conflicting factions of Underrail as they violently struggle to survive in the harsh underground environment.

This plays like a difficulty mod.

This is not a game that is meant to be fun for the majority of gamers, this game is meant to be survived, and as a second job reserved only for masochists and the hardcore… As it plays like it was made by modders, not developers as they are iron focused on difficulty and rebelling against what elite gamers consider casual, as this game is in no way made to be fun for all, but survived by a select few… Its idea of fun is to limit everything that makes video games fun for the majority of players, by crippling the player with an oppressive RNG as well as limiting the freedom for the player for the sake of difficulty, just as with the majority of difficulty mods… But as a game, it's too much of a chore to be fun as it was designed to limit the player at every turn, sure you have skills, and whatnot, but everything from the one-sided bartering system that deters selling, your loot, to the inventory and your money being scarce as to simulate the hardships and many unpleasantries of living in a post-apocalyptic world. Which is incredibly effective from an immersive point of view, but it turns out to be a chore as a gameplay mechanic, so if you love simulated hardships in your game, then please go out and buy this game! Well I don't buy games to survive them, I buy them to have fun, otherwise it's just work! No disrespect to those that crave consistent and permanent challenges, indeed, their role is vital for keeping a balance, so gaming doesn't turn into an interactive screen saver, but if it's ONLY for the elite, you will not have the large audience nor be as memorable to the gaming landscape, aside from a certain percentage of elite gamer, much like with mods. So buy this game if you're an elite gamer, as it was custom-made for you, but if not, then find another game as this game is not for you!

It's like Fallout 1-2, except boring

To its credit, the combat, crafting, skill/lvling mechanics are solid, some of it even better then Fallout! But... who cares? I don't play CRPGs for how awesome the combat is, because its not. Even at its best like it is here, it cannot be expected to prop up you're entire experience. Why? Because the setting, the story, the characters, they don't interest me. They're bland, somewhat bleak but not bleak enough to be interesting. So in short, I quickly lost interest in Fallout: boring, and would recommend you do not buy this game if you like CRPGs for the story and characters.

Very nice

This game... stands out from the rest of its kind. When I first saw this game, I though it was just another boring dungeon crawler with bad graphics, but boy was I wrong. The graphics may not be the prettiest, but the game more than makes up for it with its deep freedom of exploration, mysterious places, combat arsenal and its story line. I mean holy hell, if that wasn't enough then to add to the pile, the game is huge. Although the levels are rather small on their own, there are just so many of them that it never gets boring. There is even character customization to match your play style. Personally I went for the stealthy psionic sniper and I wasn't disappointed. It starts out hard, but once you get to know the enemies and mechanics you can pretty much predict their moves and adapt accordingly. The AI could be improved a bit (i.e. upon throwing a grenade some enemies will just walk from their spot to the point of explosion and back - you could place many mines in their path and repeat the process until they were dead without entering combat at all), but I won't complain about it too much. Overall it was a good experience playing this.

Do you like Fallout 1&2? Try UnderRail!

I am admittedly a big fan of isolinear games as well as exploration games so this really scratches that Fallout and early Black Isle itch in the same way. It has an expansive open world to explore and an leveling system that encourages exploration. The only cons I really have for the game are nitpicks and don't diminish the experience for me. The game has no fast travel so it can become a bit of a walking simulator at times as you haul yourself back to the closest settlement through cave after cave you have cleared out. Navigation is also a bit tricky because the overworld map is a touch difficult to follow and large dungeons don't have maps at all so I find myself getting lost occasionally, and the inventory management is a touch tedious. All in all however, I love it.
