Hardcore RPG with a ton of charm

I'll start this off by saying this game obviously isn't for everyone, but it scratches an itch few other games can. The difficulty isn't a joke, my first time playing I got wiped by the same dude throwing the same grenade at least 10 times in a row. 10/10. But if you think this game might be for you, it probably is. Incredible world building, great story, deep combat and crafting mechanics, and an awesome XP system that rewards you for actually achieving things, not just mindless slaughter and grinding.

Very Addictive

I usually don't enjoy turn based games, but this one has me very addicted. This game doesn't hold your hand like most game do. There are no mission markers, you have to get directions or find your own way to places, but I personally like that. Some of the gameplay mechanics are very deep, especially some of the tech crafting systems. I would recommend playing for an hour or two before starting a real play-through just to get an idea of what skills are most important to you. I also love the art style and the setting of this game, there's just something about it which makes me want to explore the world, and there is certainly lots to explore. It felt like I was still scratching the surface of this game after 50 hours. The music is also quite nice and helps set the atmosphere of different areas on the map. Some people have said the writing isn't great, but most characters do have quite a bit of depth and dialog, some of which is fairly humorous.

Good but not for everyone

This arguably is a good game but it is not for everyone. This is NOT the Fallout 3 that "should" have been - like some people claim - although I really hoped for it to be. It resembles Fallout because it is post-apocalyptic and has some equipment/armor kinda reminding the game (also a Pip-Boy reference which I found hilarious!) but it is a lot closer to Metro in its feel. Anyway, that is not a bad thing, just wanted to make things straight. Exploration is nice with large areas to cover and many things to see. The combat can be a bit swallow though and some character builds might not work as expected. There are lots of people that had to restart the game because their initial build was not sufficient. There is no cover mechanic for those that care (I personally don't care that much) and also the plot/writing are a bit weak at points. The game manages to surpass those "faults" though and immerse you quite nicely, having you coming back for more IF you can look past its biggest flaw which can also become its bane. And that is: the lack of a map! Be it a local map of the area you are currently exploring or a larger world map, there is NONE! You can - and will - get lost at times which can be very frustrating and not knowing what area sizes you are going against can be really intimidating. I managed to get past this issue, but I know people that quit playing it because of this. So if you are up for a game with great potential and interesting stuff to do, reminding you all those older era crpgs that we all loved this can be a game for you - if you skip the things mentioned above.

FO 1 & 2 but better

There isn't anything like FO 1 and 2 that I'm aware of. That's it for that genre. Those games were made a long time ago, they were awesome, now they're gone. The sequels after 1 and 2 just took on the same storyline but the gameplay is entirely different now, obviously. So for the longest time we had no options if we wanted to play more games like that. Now we have underrail, and it's really good. I don't write many reviews, but this is a game from a small developer that not a lot of people know about and I hope more people will buy it and experience it. I'm 20+ hours in now and cannot wait to get back to it once I'm done writing this review. I think the best way I can describe it is to just say that it really is FO 1 & 2 but better. Everything you liked about those games is here, but improved on. Story is great, atmosphere is great, combat is great, crafting, character customization, etc etc. It's great. Buy it. Share it.
