Interactive Movie

Interactive movie. Nice visuals and sound design / music. Atmospheric, has a creepier atmosphere at times than some horror games I've played. Tells a basic story about corporate misdeeds and personal loss, the latter having some allegorical value. Minimalist storytelling, you don't get complete details or resolution on any of the story threads. Gameplay is the usual interactive movie stuff, follow a set of linear quests pressing buttons only when prompted to on screen. But the swimming and submersible controls are quite good, better than in some 'real' games I've played. I quite enjoyed tooling around in the ocean even before the story kicked in. It's short and more movie than game, so I would recommend picking it up on sale. The submersible can go up to the surface, do so from time to time.

buy at heavy discount

STAN CAN DO WITHOUT THAT PRETENTIOUS BACKGROUND VOICE it ruins the entire game genre with: let me be clear hey I'm annoying and won't let you enjoy your spare time. This game was not meant to be fun and thast's that out of the way. That voice is the metaphor that NGOs are boring as hell. The controls are a bit clunky but performance and graphicswise pretty good. I will put the game aside because I can't stand that voice anymore. And because of it only three stars.

Very medicore but story keeps you going

It's quite important to mention that Under The Waves, while telling the story of Stan, is also intended to educate players about the real-life Surfrider Foundation. Initially, when I bought this game and saw that notice in the main menu, I was quite afraid I had wasted my money, but it was not that bad. The game, in general, is indeed oversimplified and filled with tasks like cleaning the ocean floor of plastic litter. However, if you focus on the story itself and bear with some boring moments, it has a sci-fi vibe and an underwater adventure that is not so common. While almost every game mechanic was quite poor, Stan's story was not that interesting to me, and I completely ignored the Surfrider Foundation background, there are some things that catch your attention just enough to keep it going.

Melancholic wander on the ocean floor

It's got a lovely feel to it. The story is was great until towards the end where it gets a little lost, but that's OK, endings can be hard. Gameplay is casual and satisfying, there's easily enough to do. Take it slow and enjoy the ride, I did.

A beautiful casual diving sim

No combat. Just watch your oxygen and certain map hazards. Mostly a maze puzzler with a lot of exploration, resource collection and unlocking to do. Very beautiful depiction of life underwater. Enjoyed the minigames and treasure hunting and wildlife photo taking. Sad there was only one animal companion you could tame for awhile. Do wish more was done with the engine and more could be done with the companion like D-Dog in Metal Gear Solid V. More maps and wildlife and treasure for the main character to comment on or quests. More musical tracks to play on your guitar.
