Army Management You are the general. You have full control over the army composition. Based on your successes and reputation you might get access to more corps, divisions and brigades. Keep your soldiers alive and they will learn to fight better, turning from green rookies to crack veterans. Lose a lot of your soldiers and you might not have enough reinforcements to deliver victories. Your reputation will suffer, army morale will drop and you will be forced to resign.

Innovative Command System You decide which level of control you want. Command every unit individually or just give them a main goal with one button click and watch if they can take that hill. Army divisions commanders can make decisions on their own and help you control the largest army. Draw a defensive line and allocated brigades will defend it like lions. Or design a deep flanking maneuver by just drawing an arrow and send the whole army to the enemy flank or the rear. Your generals will try to fulfill your orders, although "no plan survives contact with the enemy".

Officer Progression Historical unit commanders progress and become better fighters together with the player. The Officers rank up based on their units’ performance, but it's war and they can be wounded or even get killed in action. New ranks open new possibilities and allow officers to lead bigger units without efficiency loss. Winning battles also opens new possibilities for you as a general, increasing skills such as reconnaissance or political influence.

Historical Weapons There is huge variety of Civil War weaponry from mass produced Enfield pattern rifles to rare Whitworths. Historical availability has also been implemented. Certain weapons can only be captured by raiding supplies or taken from the enemy on the battlefield.

Enhanced Unit Control Detach skirmishers to send them to scout those hills ahead. Or merge several brigades into one bigger division if it’s needed. Dismount the cavalry to become less visible to the enemy or mount for fast flanking charges and supply raids. Supplies are extremely important and you have to plan and defend the provisions otherwise the battle might end for you early.

Advanced Artificial Intelligence You will face a strong enemy. AI will flank you, will hit your weak spots and undefended high ground, will chase and cut your supplies and will try to destroy unguarded artillery batteries. AI will use terrain and will take cover and retreat if overwhelmed.

Terrain Matters Trenches, lines, fences, houses, fields – everything can help to achieve victory, if you know how to use it. Hills will allow you to see enemy units earlier. Rivers and bridges can become natural obstacles that will help you to defend. Forests can help you hide your movements and flank the enemy.

Beautiful Maps We believe that modern technology allows hardcore war-games to finally stop being brown on green hexes. Hardcore, deep war games can be beautiful. In our game, every historical battle landscape is accurately hand-drawn, utilizing data from satellite and historical maps. The topography plays immense strategic role and helps to understand how battles were fought and to learn history.

Good successor to Sid Meier's Civil War

Overall, the game is good. There's a nice strategic layer above the tactical battlefield. The better you do in battle, the more experience points you gain. You can spend these points to increase the money and troops after each battle, lower the cost of new equipment or veteran replacements, increase the size of your army, etc. You also need to build up and equip your army. While this layer isn't super in-depth, it is a nice way to have a more vested interest in your troops. Having built up a specific division over the course of many battles keeps the game interesting over the course of the long campaign. The battles themselves are well done. Some are minor, and can be completed in a few in-game hours with only a few divisions or a single corps. The major battles (Antietam, Gettysburg, etc.) take place over the course of several days with changing (and new) fronts. Do well in the minor battles, and you can give them various maluses like decreased size of the enemy army, inferior equipment, or lower experience levels. The AI in the battles is solid, but not spectacular. Like most AIs, it seems to do better in defence than attack. In the beginning of battles it seems to do well, but eventually it just seems to peter out. It will send its cavalry and skirmishers to harass your troops as you approach, and I've had an entire division tied down by single AI skirmisher unit. But it fails to adjust to your troops movements once you decide on a flank to hit hard. Its line will remain relatively unchanged even as you move divisions from one side to the other to outnumber the enemy. I've lost only a few battles on the normal level, and most of those were because of a time limit. The AI isn't bad, but once you figure out how the cover system and other intricacies of battle work, you will consistently win against larger armies. Still, it's a fun game that reminds me of Sid Meier's foray into the Civil War, and that is one of the best compliments I can give.

Perfect.

Like playing the best TOTAL war game but MUCH more realistic and gritty. Unlike TOTAL war it doesn't allow you to cheat and build a huge army but forces you to STRATEGISE! Although the graphics are slightly basic, the sounds of battle are incredibly atmospheric and immersive. The terrain is detailed enough to give nuance to every battle - it really feels like you have control of each soldier and their fate is in your hands! Flank or allow thousands to perish!... ...... (but is the enemy flanking you?!!!)

Amazing American Civil War Game

This is hands down the best ACW game I have ever played. Building an army up from afew brigades to several corps that you get to completely customize along the way is incredibly satisfying. The maps are all very wonderfully well done; there are in the mid 30's battles for each side ranging from minor to major battles from history and a few hypothetical ones for the end. There are a few decent mods that make it even better that can be found on the games offical forum.

American Civil War I waited for decades

There have been many attempts to make a American Civil War video game. Some were good (Age of Rifles), some were funny (North and South) and some were really quirky (The Blue and the Grey). This one is the one I was waiting since I watched the TV show North and South in the late 80s. It is almost a perfect game. It has some quirks (like no enfilading cannon fire) or no formations (yeah but who needs them right?), or it has no concept of friendly fire (you can easily shoot into a melee crowd of your and enemy units and none of yours will get hit). The most important part is these deficencies do not matter, the game is entertaining, it takes you right into the ACW era and you can enjoy it thouroughly (lets take that Little Round Top; Look Sickles is out of his position lets get him!; Burnside, you shall not pass!; Hmm I wonder how a Union all out attack in Cold Harbor will end. Lets try it). The game is really fun if you are into ACW. If there were just a couple more battles (Vicksburg, Missionary Ridge, Siege of Petersburg, Atlanta) it would have been a perfect 6 score!
