Description
Ultimate General: Civil War is a tactical war-game. Experience the bloodiest period of U.S. history - the American Civil War of 1861-1865.

MAIN FEATURES

Full Campaign: Fight in the American Civil War campaign and participate in 50+ battles from small engagements to massive battles that can last several days over hundreds of square miles of terrain. • Battle of Aquia Creek
  • Battle of Philippi
  • 1st Battle of Bull Run
  • Battle of Shiloh
  • Battle of Gaines' Mill
  • Battle of Malvern Hill
  • 2nd Battle of Bull Run
  • Battle of Antietam
  • Battle of Fredericksburg
  • Battle of Stones River
  • Battle of Chancellorsville
  • Battle of Gettysburg
  • Battle of Chickamauga
  • Battle of Cold Harbor
  • Battle of Richmond
  • Battle of Washington
  • Plus 48 smaller scale battles

Army Management You are the general. You have full control over the army composition. Based on your successes and reputation you might get access to more corps, divisions and brigades. Keep your soldiers alive and they will learn to fight better, turning from green rookies to crack veterans. Lose a lot of your soldiers and you might not have enough reinforcements to deliver victories. Your reputation will suffer, army morale will drop and you will be forced to resign.

Innovative Command System You decide which level of control you want. Command every unit individually or just give them a main goal with one button click and watch if they can take that hill. Army divisions commanders can make decisions on their own and help you control the largest army. Draw a defensive line and allocated brigades will defend it like lions. Or design a deep flanking maneuver by just drawing an arrow and send the whole army to the enemy flank or the rear. Your generals will try to fulfill your orders, although "no plan survives contact with the enemy".

Officer Progression Historical unit commanders progress and become better fighters together with the player. The Officers rank up based on their units’ performance, but it's war and they can be wounded or even get killed in action. New ranks open new possibilities and allow officers to lead bigger units without efficiency loss. Winning battles also opens new possibilities for you as a general, increasing skills such as reconnaissance or political influence.

Historical Weapons There is huge variety of Civil War weaponry from mass produced Enfield pattern rifles to rare Whitworths. Historical availability has also been implemented. Certain weapons can only be captured by raiding supplies or taken from the enemy on the battlefield.

Enhanced Unit Control Detach skirmishers to send them to scout those hills ahead. Or merge several brigades into one bigger division if it’s needed. Dismount the cavalry to become less visible to the enemy or mount for fast flanking charges and supply raids. Supplies are extremely important and you have to plan and defend the provisions otherwise the battle might end for you early.

Advanced Artificial Intelligence You will face a strong enemy. AI will flank you, will hit your weak spots and undefended high ground, will chase and cut your supplies and will try to destroy unguarded artillery batteries. AI will use terrain and will take cover and retreat if overwhelmed.

Terrain Matters Trenches, lines, fences, houses, fields – everything can help to achieve victory, if you know how to use it. Hills will allow you to see enemy units earlier. Rivers and bridges can become natural obstacles that will help you to defend. Forests can help you hide your movements and flank the enemy.

Beautiful Maps We believe that modern technology allows hardcore war-games to finally stop being brown on green hexes. Hardcore, deep war games can be beautiful. In our game, every historical battle landscape is accurately hand-drawn, utilizing data from satellite and historical maps. The topography plays immense strategic role and helps to understand how battles were fought and to learn history.

It has promise, but...

Without a tutorial or even a manual, the learning curve is ridiculously steep. The first level of the campaign is the closest it gets to a tutorial, and after some cursory explanations it tosses you into the fire. I'm still not sure how the Innovative Command System works. I get drawing a line with RMB will deploy the selected units along that line, but the one click attack? They'll turn their flank to the enemy and get cut to pieces. What do the map icons mean? I figured out the shield means a brigade can take up defensive positions. But what does the eye and the three dots mean? These questions could be easily answered in a five minute tutorial, or even rolled into the first level of the campaign. Aside from not really knowing how the game works, I must say it's otherwise enjoyable.

Ultimate General: Civil War

This is the best wargame I have ever played. I can't even go back to Total War after this. The graphics are beautiful, the sprites are very reminiscent of Shogun Total War or Medieval. The amount of control and smooth gameplay right out of the box is amazing. I know this was in early access for some time, but I got the complete version on a sale recently and it is fully equipped and feature complete as far as I know. Also the AI is some of the best I have ever seen in any game. They really will try and flank you and steal your supplies and launch never ending raids on your flanks. The campaign is awesome with literally more choice, consequence and roleplaying than Fallout 4. My two main complains are: I want to zoom in more. I want better battle barks. The ones now are weak and repetitive. Sometimes friendly units just do shit without my order and it drives me crazy. Even if you tell them to hold.

Developers Please Read

Game Labs, you made a fantastic game....but please read this because there's so much that could be done better. I recently finished the Confederate Campaign, and here is my experience: I won nearly every single battle (playing on easy mode to learn the game) and had a giant army of well-trained troops. At the Battle of Cold Harbor, one of the objectives was to capture 3 different key points. The only problem is that you get about half as much time as you need to capture the 3 objectives. After the time runs out, you lose the battle. Here's the real crappy part: YOU LOSE THE WHOLE DARN WAR TOO. Seriously??? Did you guys even play this before you released it??? Another gripe is the flanking and rout mechanics. It was WAY too easy for a unit to be "flanked" (which really means they weren't attacked from head-on in this game). Even if there are friendly units on the left and right, the middle one can still be hit with the "flank" penalty and routes about 30 seconds later. Last Gripe: Cavalry and Skirmisher units are completely USELESS. Why devote an entire battalion to skirmishers when you can just detach them from an infantry battalion??? Cavalry units take a few shots at the enemy, then literally run away as far as they can get from the battle. You have to micromanage every single movement of cavalry, and even then they are nearly impossible to command. Not to mention enemy cavalry runs right through your lines and now becomes a huge pain in the butt to deal with. TL;DR I put many many hours into this game despite its flaws because it's the best strategy game on the market (other than Civ). But please....Fix the mechanics.

Wow

After this game I'll find it very difficult to ever play any Total War again. Outstanding stuff.

One of the best games I ever played

You know how sometimes you get so focused on finishing a game that it almost starts to feel like work? Well, that NEVER happened in this game - 100+ hours in and I was still loving it. I normally hate micro-managing, but in this game, it was fun! The historical elements, the men, the weapons, the locations, it was just perfect. Just buy it! The only reason not to buy this game would be if you hate the civil war or if you hate strategy - real-time war game mixes.
