Description
In the seventh installment of the Ultima series you — the Avatar — must go back to Britannia and investigate a series of strange events. Two hundred years have passed since your last visit and much has changed since then. An unknown being who calls himself the Guardian has appeared and is forcing everyone to bow to his whims. In addition magic doesn't work as it should, it seems that all of the mages have gone insane, and quiet towns are being terrorized with ritualized murders. It is unclear what is happening, but initial signs point to some kind of organization called the Fellowship. It is up to you to unravel the mystery and find out what is really going on in Britannia.

Ultima 7 is arguably one the best in the series. With enhanced graphics, sound, and controls it was a huge step forward not only for the series, but for the entire RPG genre. The level of immersion was astonishing at the time. Rich environments, wide-ranging dialog trees, and dynamic combat were all masterfully combined by a team that Lord British (Richard Garriott) led to create a game that can't be ignored by any cRPG fan.

Best game ever.

This is my number one game of all time. From all the hidden content to the feelings of satisfaction when you finish the game, this is the pinnacle of game design. Now if Lord British would give me back my 80 bucks I spent on Ultima IX...

I cant stress enough,

How this game changed how I saw gaming. I still to this day, compare all RPGs To This one. This game was a Masterpiece and anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves. I have played through this game three separate times with almost five years in between and I still love it as much as the first.

It's about time!

Kudos to GOG for finally picking up U7. Quite possibly one of the greatest games ever made if only because you can break it in so many ways and not a single person who played the game ever really complained about it. That's how immersive this truly open-world game was. I'm not sure if the GOG version is compatible with Exult, but anyone wishing for an up-to-date experience might want to check out the Exult project which is an ongoing emulator to run U7 on modern systems. That being said, the DOSBox version works just fine as well.

An Experience In Its Own Right!

As a devoted Commodore and Amiga Puritan since the dawn of those legends I must bow my head and confess that this game alone is the reason I spent close to 2000 GBP on a IBM Ambra 486DX running at 33Mhz back in '93/'94. Since Ultima VI was the last of the line to be released on the Amiga (as revealed in a sad and sorrowful piece of text I read in a copy of CU Amiga many moons ago) I knew I had to make the shift to the nasty soulless PC compatible (shudder). For this game is one full of character and depth, freedom and adventure - that must be played and savoured.. for all good things must come to an end. Possibly the best of its kind.

Fond memories

This is one of my fondest memories of playing RPGs. It is a great game with an absolutely fantastic story. Besides the story, this was the first game that gave me the sensation of being in a living, breathing world. Lots of characters to get to learn and all seem to have their place and time in this world. Each town and its residents are an adventure in itself and makes the game a really interesting experience. The interface takes a bit of getting used to, but once that is done, and the initial annoyance over that is over, it slowly gains on you and a few hours into the game you really appreciate how the interface in no way interferes with your adventures in Britannia. This is the best Ultima game out there, and if you only play one Ultima game (which every RPG player should) this should be the one.
