Description
Experience fantasy role-playing’s most distinctive and award-winning series in this special three-game collection. Ultima: The Second Trilogy follows the spellbinding tale of the Avatar in this richly detailed and challenging story. The setting is medieval Britannia, but the stories are timeless and involve universal issues that explore the essence of virtue. First, there is the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment in Ultima IV, where your personal ethics are tested in a treacherous struggle to demonstrate the eight virtues of Avatarhood. Then in Ultima V, you rely on your new-found strengths and skills to oppose a tyrannical leader who warps the virtues you uphold through his twisted legislation of morality. Finally, in the epic concluding chapter of Ultima VI, you, the Avatar, must resolve the cultural conflict between a race of hostile creatures and your own. It all adds up to a relentless test of character in a world where things are not always as they appear, and evil is not easily defined.

  • Visit thousands of colorful places and characters, search towns, castles, and villages. Converse with merchants and mages, all as you walk, ride, and sail across Britannia
  • Explore magic, combat, and deception – weave hundreds of magical spells, watch axes and arrows fly in combat, discover clues, and solve mysteries
  • Witness the transformation from Stranger to Avatar through self-improvement, then join him on his quests to save Britannia and become the savior of all.

The games that defined RPG's

The Ultima games (well particularly 1-7pt2) are probably the best RPG's I've ever played. these games compared to say the elder scrolls are massively superior in story and interaction with the environment. and also the interaction with characters is also superior as you don't have set options of what to say to them... well I say that but in 7 and 7pt 2 it doesn't tell you what you'll say but... well its difficult to explain really. Anyway moving on. I really recommend these games to any of you who liked the Dungeons and dragons Table top RPG or anyone who liked Baldur's gate or ice wind dale etc.

3 of the best CRPGs ever.

You really can't go wrong in buying this. Just make sure you play lots of Ultima 4 before playing 5. It makes U5 all the more fun to play through.

Some of the best RPGs of all time

There are three games that I literally spent years on exploring their worlds., Ultima 6 and Baldur's gate 1&2. Both have amazingly detailed populated worlds that shock, delight and amaze you with new discoveries over and over again. Ultima 4&5 are great games, ultima 6 is an experience.

Great trilogy

Ultima IV was a great change of pace for RPGs back in the day and I still have quite a bit of fun with it and its class system. You'll want to get the Ultima patcher to make sure that both IV and V are given a bit of a boost, mostly in the music department. There is a VGA graphics patch for IV, but not for V yet unfortunately. I felt that the class system in V and VI was a downgrade from IV, but they're still good games. Ultima VI is the one game that can be played as is straight from GoG. It took me a moment to get used to the change from the earlier games (isometric view vs overhead), but after I got used to it I liked it quite a bit. I haven't tried any of the fan projects for Ultima VI like Nuvie, but if you're interested you can get them here along with other patches and whatnot for the other Ultima games: http://ultima6.ultimacodex.com/

The Debate Is: Which was better, 4 or 5?

My heart says 4, but my game designer mind and the test of time (30th anniversary this summer) look at 4 and say "great start, wonderful start, but you ain't seen nuthin yet!" The thing about 4 is, at the time my main understanding of a video game was in the arcades or the Atari. You might as well contrast Chessmaster 4000 and King's Quest 4. So I walked into U4 with no understanding of a CRPG. I have never been so blown away by a video game in my life. But when it come to fun to play to this day, it's always Ultima V for me. That'll always stay soldered into my brain as the apex of Ultima. Sure, Ultima VII might be a better game overall, but there's just nothing quite like the boundless sense of adventure in Ultima V. Some say there is an ultima V remake in the works, one with a new, independent engine, due out March, 2018. Badger @SaltyRatSoft on the twitter can tell you more. As for U6, never played it. If it'd been ported to Mac at the time, I would've but... maybe someday. Never liked gargoyles..
