UBOAT is a simulator of a submarine from WWII era, yet different than all you have seen so far. It is a survival sandbox with crew management mechanics while its primary theme is life of German sailors. The boat is their home, but it can become their grave at any time.
In UBOAT you control the crew in order to control the boat. You look after their physical and mental health, because if the sailors are hungry, tired and their spirit is low, there’s no chance of winning even a skirmish.
Survival
The extensive damage system is a foundation of the game's survival elements. Unprecedented situations are bound to happen as the effect of received damage, testing player's creativity and ability to stay calm. You can try to save the whole crew or leave someone behind, to save the others.
While your ship travels through the open seas, you will often find yourself being on your own. Use your management skills to spend resources taken on the trip optimally and in special cases try to recover them on the sea, by asking your allies for the help... or by looting wreckages of enemy ships.
Disable unnecessary devices, to keep your accumulators running for longer.
Tell your crew to stay in their bunks to preserve oxygen.
If crew's morale is low - play with them a session of Skat or play music from nearby radio stations, to fortify their hearts.
Kriegsmarine career
During the playthrough you will receive assignments from the Kriegsmarine headquarters. They are never linear and you may receive additional orders during them or face unexpected problems.
Brave completion of assignments from the headquarters is rewarded with additional budget for the unit under your command and with acceptance of your growing reputation as an u-boat's skipper. You will need that, to upgrade your ship and keep up with enemy's technological advances.
Upgrade your boat for the rewarded funds.
Receive additional permissions for the reputation points.
Buy new equipment - new torpedo types, sonar decoys, CO2 absorbers and much more.
Send your officers on special tasks in the headquarters to, among other things, speed up a research of new technologies.
Accurate simulation
Game's simulation elements are very realistic, but that never comes at a cost of gameplay quality. Despite extensive simulation elements, UBOAT can be played like a regular game and complex matters can be learned later to become a better skipper for the commanded unit.
Even small things like the influence of ballast in each compartment on the ship's trim (tilt) or Earth's curvature are faithfully reproduced in the game.
Perfection can be achieved in many ways. Prove your management skills and swiftly assign work to your officers to speed things up. If, on the other hand, you think that if something needs to be done, it's better to do that on your own - sit behind the periscope, hydrophone or 88 mm deck gun and take matters in your own hands!

Never been so happy to draw lines and circles for sinking ships !
The game has a steep learning curve at the beginning but it's easily worth the joy of sinking your first ships with all the calculations done by yourself.
Now that the game has been in beta for a long time the most annoying but (at least for me) are gone. Game is beautiful and you often find yourself just looking at your beautiful submarine sailing at a sunset after sinking a full convoy.
The menus and settings are a bit clunky and have a 2010 inspiration but they're functional so that's all that matters.
Try to fast save as often as possible as the pathfining of your ship can sometime be a bit weird and you'll hit the port when leaving it if you don't pay attention.
Overall that's a really nice game and for this price you have exactly what you're looking for: a small submarine video game looking very promising !
Development is still in progress and developers seem to pay attention to player's feedbacks which is great, thanks to them :)
THe game looks promising, but currenlty the controls are terrible. It's playable but not ready. I hope it improves because the flow is not quite there.
From the start UBOAT is a Good WW2 submarine simulator.
Game systems are easly tought to you by several tutorials that explain many aspects of this game. From the beggining the game allows you to modify many aspects like: economy, crew management, the targeting system (manual / automatic {the crew takes care of that} ).
We have a great campaign that starts in the begginig of the war to the very end with the changes very easly seen like the enemy using more effective ways to find and drown us ( I still hear those pings in my head ).
But why 4 stars, here i come with the answer Crew Menagment, the only thing that i was displeased with. It's not bad, but requies some patience and understanding when
to do certain tasks like don't set "warming up the torpedoes" high up in the priorities tab. Because then the officer will mainly use his time on duty to make your torpedoes nice and slippery, activate it when you know that the convoy is near or order the oficers manualy so that you can easly make the convoy face it's fate.
Overall a nice experience.
Like the most simulations, Uboat really benefits from "manual labor". The less automation the better. Its quite unsatisfying to play on low difficulty, It feels shallow and lacks of content. But doing everything on your own, like locating enemies on the map or calculating attack solutions and intercept courses feels awesome once you succeed and spot detonating torpedos on the horizon. To me it could even be more complicated. More to do and more to put into account. Maybe I should start over with disabled section view.
Anyway I look forward for more content and updates and hopefully DLCs.
I purchased it in Early Access on Steam, the ingame tutorial was bugged, but that is one of the risks you take when you buy Early Access / In Devolepment games, and after watching some youtube tutorials, i found out how to play the game, and it is really fun once you get the hang of it.
I do see some reviews that state that the game have no updates, this is not true, look at the steam forum to see when latest update were out. Also i see some reviews saying that the game is full of bugs and so on, that is kinda the point of Early Access / In Devolepment purchases. that you help iron out the bugs, and give suggestions and ideas to the dev. team.
I would give this 5/5, but keep in mind that if you buy the game, that it is Early Access / In Devolepment, and you will most likely encounter bugs, or that you might even have to start over.
Early Access / In Devolepment was never ment to be complete and bug free games, but to support the game development.
