This is one of the best games I've ever played.
This is if not THE HARDEST - ONE OF THE HARDEST strategy games out there.
you constantly have to make tough strategic decisions as you are playing:
-should I send my army this way or that way to penetrate the enemy base?
-should I conquer this enemy building and use it to my advantage or that one?
-how should I position the hero units so they don't get destroyed by those horrible enemy wizards?
-should I proceed with this type of unit or that type into a known enemy ambush?
-how and where should I make my defense fortifications to withstand a gigantic enemy attack?
These are all questions you would have to rethink over and over again as you play this game.
If you go on normal difficulty like I did - only a couple of the levels will literally take you 40 HOURS to complete.
It's that challenging. You will have to read the strategy guide for some of the levels.
The negative reviews were made by stupid people who probably got stuck at levels 5 or 6 and gave up. Ignore those reviews.
Make no mistake, this will be the hardest strategy game you've ever played.
And this is certainly if not the best - one of the best strategy games out there.
Every mission is unique and interesting. You build up armies; you go on explorations; you set up long stone wall
fortifications with towers and gates.
There is also a level where you have to get a spy into an enemy base full of patrols and counter-spies hiding in the houses.
Make one wrong move and they'll catch you and you have to restart the mission.
And also this game features three races: Europeans, Arabs, and East Asians; so it's very appealing to a world audience.
I definitely recommend it.
One of those games that after 10 years you keep playing.
(i'm adapting other user's opinions)
Cons.
> Pathfinding is horrible, units sometimes can get stuck in the woods, others seems to have problems finding the right way so you must give him an extra help.
> There's no formation templates (whatever is the correct term). Basically you can't choose a formation, so you must put every unit here and there to make the formation, if a tree is on the way, the soldier that hit the tree and fall behind.
> The lack of formation sense makes synergy with the fast vs slow unit, this means that the mounted units will not slow down to wait for the soldiers. his extends for the enemies' attacks, a big line of soldiers lol.
> The menu is cool, but it lacks compatibility for bigger resolutions, it can't fill the entire screen.
Honestly, they could fix this in a matter of days.
Pros
> Cool and pleasant story (even if a bit cliche here and there).
> The music is fit for the game.
> Amazing tech tree, hard to get every research during a war.
> 3 Races, Europeans, Asians, Arabs, with their pros and cons (even though i prefer Asians)
> AMAZING Map editor, it's ridiculously simple to create your own map, edit every unit/building, set every kingdom name, set starting resources, alliances, everything!
> It's actually hard, the campaign is actually hard, and awesome.
> The famous level up system.
> Addicting in the first weeks. Somehow, when you get tired of the game, after some weeks or months you come again.
The 10 years old me wants to give it a 4, but for anyone who never played it, have a 3.
I believe you win more than you lose by getting the game, it's totally worth of the 5 Euros or Dollars.
One of the best combo of RTS and RPG. The units aren't just replaceable assets of war. You will want to keep your soldiers alive because with every battle they survive they become stronger. It actually makes you think and plan your game differently from most other strategy games.
The biggest down side of the game is that your army is always in great need of your guidance when moving large forces. If you make them move though the forest, for example, there is a great risk they will come on the other side with their line stretch thin and will become easy target for enemies. In short, army management can be too much work.
