    Description

The Tyrant landed in Tyberia bearing promises of a paradise, without war, without suffering… and without death. All Tyberians had to do in order to enter his paradise was to simply die at the hands of his Dead Army. The war was over before it even began, with thousands perishing in the Tyrant's wake, only to be brought into his fold as undying thralls, bound by magic. The few living warriors left are scattered across the remnants of their homeland, tirelessly looking for a way to turn the tables on the tyrannical Tyrant. Lead a great Uprising, defeat the Dead Army, and drive the monstrous overlord back into the depths of the sea from whence he came.

Tyrant's Blessing is a tactical turn-based game where your ability to plan, adapt, and strategize is more important than min-maxing your units or finding the sharpest sword in the hoard. Select battles every day, make challenging choices, and cleverly use the strengths of these rag-tag insurgents to defeat the undead hordes and maybe - just maybe - bring real life back to Tyberia.

Before you bring the battle to the Tyrant's doorstep, you'll have to make sure you live long enough to reclaim the Island.

    • Decide whether to fight, rescue the living from the Undying, or gather your strength. Every choice matters throughout every day of the Uprising.
    • As you fight your way across the face of Tyberia, face off against random encounters that force difficult decisions. Do you intervene and fight highwaymen, putting your warriors at risk? Do you try to save a child, risking valuable time and resources? Only your morals and ideals hold the answer.

The Tyrant can’t be defeated without destroying an army's worth of the Undying. However, winning is more than simply whacking the enemy as hard as you can.

    • Analyze the fray and plan accordingly. Place warriors around the battlefield to gain strategic advantages.
    • Stay ever mindful of surroundings: kick up dust to make the enemies lose sight or hop over stones and dodge into bushes to avoid enemy attacks.
    • Mind the enemy: every attack is telegraphed, but take care, simply moving away leaves behind a shadow. This remnant of a character can still be attacked if there is no way to avoid it...
    • Knock the enemies out of the way and into obstacles, shield weaker heroes with ones that can tank damage, as well as chain powerful elemental attacks using the environment. Brute force works, but fight smarter, not harder.

Each of your heroes has their own personality, properties, and abilities. Who will you choose to put in harm’s way?

    • Enlist twenty hallowed heroes, each with a distinct set of abilities that can dramatically alter the course of any battle.
    • But stay mindful: Not all heroes appear in a playthrough - and not everyone is guaranteed to make it to the finish line of this quest.
    • Pick the right team for the task. An assassin may thrive in confined spaces, while an archer will suffer in close quarters. Some heroes may even bring their pets along, who might provide just enough leverage to win a battle for the group.
    • We cannot afford to lose even a single hero to the undead tyrant!

A roguelike pretending to be a TRPG

I was really looking forward to a tactical RPG experience, but what I got is a roguelike that is more interested in having the player grind over and over again while it kills you repeatedly. It's not a terrible game, but it's rather shallow. The story is basically 2 lines of dialogue. A tyrant took over and you need to kill them. There's some fun dialogues between characters, but they're far and few between. The visuals are pretty good, though. The pixel art is beautiful and flowing, but the stage maps are lacking any personality. They're all flat, square grids with some trees or rocks. Nothing really unique or interesting to look at. The mechanics is where the devs chose to focus their efforts. Enemies will all move and telegraph attacks at the start of the turn and you take all your actions to interupt, move or defeat the enemies before they attack. If your'e targeted and move you leave behind a 'shade', a shadow of your character that can still take damage. In the early stages your mostly evenly matched with the enemies, so performing well enough to take no damage a turn is really satisfying, but the game very quickly scales up the battles where you're outnumbered and enemies have area effects so avoiding the damage becomes nearly impossible. Also you can damage yourself by striking your own shades. On paper, this is a great idea. In execution, it proves frustrating. The devs seemed to have realized this because the game provides a 'guardians', buffs that prevent your characters from dying, but these are limited PER RUN and you can run out very quickly. And once you lose one charcter, the run is essentially a loss. See the trick is each enemy on the field will revive after each turn a set number of times. If you're facing 5 opponenents and they have 7 respawns, You're facing 5 enemies until you exhaust the 7 respawns. Once you die, you start all over. No restarting battles. If you're looking for something engaging, you won't find it here.

    cute Into The Breach clone

take it or leave it, there's no Into The Breach game design aspect that hasn't been blatantly copied. I hope Subset Games gets royalties or something, because lawsuits may be very exhausting to manage for the indie studios. Gameplay differences from the Into The Breach: 1. shadows 2. resurrections that's it. looking at the screenshots i hoped that game was heavily inspired by. it's just. i'm a bit stunned because i've never seen such a blatant rip-off of such a niché thing. part of me hopes it won't be removed from the store because i enjoy it just enough to not turn down completely. Also now i'm very open to some better turn-based game recommendations

    Let's even out those reviews.

This game is incredible. I'll edit in a significant amount of data later, but the short of it is: This is a fresh spark of something new in a stagnant genre. One completely new mechanic that adds both narrative and tactical depth alongside quite a few optimizations of older mechanics that completely remove the more vexing parts of the roguelike genre. Yes. Worth. This is a rare and valuable spark of new.

    Blatant Into the Breach clone

The game is, mechanically speaking, an almost perfect reskin of Into the Breach, which came out years ago and was the successor of legendary roguelike FTL. In fact, Tyrant's Blessing is so similar to ITB that I wonder if this counts as copyright infringement. The Mecha SciFi has been replaced with generic fantasy, and the minor changes in the game mechanics are for the worse. (The shadow mechanic is annoying like nothing else) The original also has much better pacing. There, I always felt tense, sweating over any possible mistake. Here, on the other hand I feel pretty chill most of the time. Into the Breach justified the roguelike gameplay with a time travel scenario. Your mecha squad is desperately jumping between timelines hoping to find one were earth can be saved from total destruction. The whole presentation is built to support this by giving a sense of desperate urgency. Tyrant's Blessing on the other hand is basically devoid of any investment into it's scenario. Some random Necromancer attacks some random fantasy country for whatever reason. If you win or loose... well it's just "Let's start another adventure". There is some downtime banter between the characters, but this is not enough to get me invested. If you are interested in a minimalist tactical rpg roguelike, get Into the Breach first and support the original devs creativity. If you finish it and can't get enough of the gameplay (or if you are mortally allergic to SciFi), get Tyrant's Blessing to seamlessly continue.
