This game is a good playthrough. I played it years ago and just rebought it. I docked a star because it is not native Linux. It requires wine to be installed. I really dislike that.
You will enjoy this game if you like killing, looting and upgrading your char to a demi god in the end , sort of first person view Diablo
I do not understand people who criticize the story, movies, books, games revolve around the cliche types of stories.
having finished it, my opinion :
Pros :
-Huge world to explore, I personally liked the atmosphere of the desert and dark forest
-Ability to combine the same type of items, makes looting enjoyable, lots of drop that helps upgrade stuff
-Graphics are fine, armors look cool
Cons :
-Inventory system is a bit annoying. I found the inventory too small for collecting armors. Armor names are not very creative, you need to use inventory of the mounts if you like collecting stuff just in case.
-Voice acting is poor. NPC names are funny, they seem to be generated by a program or something. The world is dull in terms of NPCs
-The mount refuses to walk over some small hills, you need to get off the mount and call it by whistle. It can get stuck in walls, rocks too. Had to load a previous save because of that.
The game's artistic side except the graphics is very poor but the rest is fine. This game is made by Germans if I am not wrong.
Overall I enjoyed it a lot due to the play style. $10 is a fair price for it. Even pirated games cost $6 in my country.
Ok so, this is one of those games that are just so innocently terrible you can't help falling in love with them.
As of today, 09/07/2012, Skyrim is the RPG everyone went nuts for; well I'm telling you, Skyrim doesn't even have half the character of this game.
If you have played games like Gothic then you will be familiar with the mild-mannered Chuck Norris type heroes these European games feature, and you will love the awkward and stiff dialog! But despite the strange opening and mild yet violent hero the game becomes quite captivating.
I'm not going to give even slight spoilers, the story is actually pretty original and told in a unique way as well; what I will say though is that there isn't the usual "Hero vs 'Evil thing with silly fantasy name'" (although there is plenty of silly fantasy names), instead you are searching for your sister who has been kidnapped and held ransom.
So while doing jobs as part of the ransom you get to travel across this very fleshed out world: you will start out in filthy peasant lands but will travel to military outposts of a Roman-like empire, visit large trading citiescastles and you can choose different factions to side with.
You can buy horses which are actually useful (the world is quite large, probably bigger than OblivionSkyrim and laid out in a more sprawling fashion) and do tons and tons and tons of odd jobsquests etc (work for merchant guilds for example).
So it's not just a big empty world! And if you travel around you will scare the crap out of yourself, you will come across weird powerful creatures and outposts; there's a sense of danger from the wilderness that just isn't found in Elder Scrolls games.
Now for the combat: very actiony, you have a Diablo style random loot system combined with a Devil May Cry third person action approach.
For those who aren't familiar with the genresgames I mentioned: The lootequipment you wear regularly increases in quality and abilities, it makes combat and treasure hunting exciting since it is randomized, you will always look forward to checking the shops out or hunting for treasure chests. When fighting you have different abilities depending on what style of combat you are after, melee characters can learn different attacks and magic characters can craftlearn different spells.
The character development is actually quite deep and there is no level limit, so you can take your time and dive deep into this game; all its mechanics are expanded nicely; Magic, Combat, Archery, Alchemy, Adventuring, Story path.
It's unpolished, awkward and has retarded rock dragons, but when you play a game where the developers were willing to try new things and actually bring a little life into their game you can't help but have fun with it.
For the price GoG are asking it's hard to fault the value, very big game and fun to terrorize in.
I'm playing the GOG linux version of this. Over many hours I have had 1 (one) glitch, which vanished on reloading, so it's basically working flawlessly.
While I haven't finished this ( I might be 1/3 to 1/2 way through now ?) I love this game. I have played *many* rpgs for many hours, and this is among the best I've tried. I love the look of it and the sound of it - both the background effects, the music and the voice work. For some reason, some people have criticised the latter as not being 'professional'. For me (as an actor :) ), it simply sounds real. Before I saw those reviews, I was thinking that it was the *best* voice acting I'd heard :)
Yes sometimes the dialog may be a bit odd ... but I love it.
It's huge; the number of weapons, armor and misc. random things is huge (and there's pictures for every one); character development allows specialisation in fighting, magic, stealth or any combination. I do suggest you need as much vitality (for HP) as you can get, but otherwise, go for it.
The map is huge. You should start on the roads, but remember to venture off them when you are a few levels higher.
I also suggest that even fighters need a buddy (ie get a few ranks in at least one magic school) so you can summon something to get in the bad guys way.
Limitations - the starting character is fixed as male, and the story premise is 'rescue your sister'. That typed, you can largely ignore this if you want and just explore. I got over this very quickly. :)
I have yet to find any alchemy recipes either for sale or elsewhere. This leaves me with experimenting and I'd rather not have to.
I would have appreciated an "item type" filter as part of the inventory system.
Great things - like all great free form RPGs you can go anywhere any time. You will be handed portions of your anatomy should you venture too far. Great. :) Did I mention it's huge ? :)
Hours of fun. Enjoy.
It is hard to evaluate the game, when it is crushing every 30 seconds. It is really hard to play the game longer than a minute.
What is interesting it does not start like that. The first hour or two are fine. All the problems start later and they are very persistent. The crushes every minute. It also looses the last saves, so you have to revert to the previous saves.
I spent many hours trying to make it work. I installed this game on four different computers. Two of them running Windows 10, one running Windows 7 and one running macOS Catalina.
All of them experienced similar problems with the Mac version being the worst.
There is no doubt in my mind that the game is not ready to run on the modern systems, has not been tested and GOG should not be selling it.
It is a broken program, which you;d have run long time ago on some legacy Windows, but it definitely does not run on the modern computers, no matter what OS they are running.
Shame on GOG for cheating their customers.
