Alan Bradley has finally perfected the technology to digitize people, which allows humans to enter the internal world of a computer. His program, "Ma3a," has AI sophisticated enough to store the entire gene code of a person and the mathematical equations necessary to transfer people back and forth between the physical and digital world.
However, fCon - Future Control Industries - has learned of Alan's research and is moving to take over the company. When Alan disappears mysteriously, finding him is up to Jet, his son. Jet uses his father's technology to enter the computer world and, while investigating his father's disappearance, discovers a sinister plot.
Four "primitive" weapons - disk, rod, ball, and mesh - are encountered in the computer world, though the disk is the only weapon that can be used both offensively and defensively. Jet will also ride light-cycles, both the classic cycle from the 1982 film and a new "experimental" update from designer Syd Mead (also responsible for the original light-cycle design).
The 2nd best "thinking" FPS ever (behind System shock 2). The visuals are awesome and still work well. Action is good and the upgrade system, interesting guns (especially the disc), and even the story with some funny twists still keep things way more interesting than most modern shooters. Having the general power/memory of the device you are in reflect in the upgrade system is very nice touch.
Still worth it.
No nostalgia goggles on – this is genuinely a really unique, quality, and enjoyable FPS is you are into Tron or sci-fi in general. I’m not sure if Tron: Legacy was already planned for a future movie release or what, but there is some mention of it in this game, which is really cool from a continuity standpoint considering I missed this game when it came out. The visual style holds up well and the writing is clever, intelligent, and lots of fun if you are into computer lingo at all.
The gameplay is a lot of platforming and disc-based FPS. Your primary weapon is basically a frisbee bommerang that you need to careful utilize so that you won’t get killed by the system or corruption goons too quickly. Combat is fast-paced and generally enjoyable. There is one part that is fairly obnoxious where some of the scout-type enemies must basically hit-scan you and can be a long, long distance away. I was quick saving like crazy and praying I could make it through, as there are scarce healing stations in that section; and the scouts don’t drop health like the other enemies. I didn’t fully appreciate what the LOL program did at the time, either (it’s a sniper rifle; uses a fair amount of energy per shot, though). There are a couple of other questionable sections, namely a few of the more crowded light cycle arenas with low visibility. You’re kind of stuck hoping that the computer walls itself off and commits suicide while trying not to do the same to yourself, which is pretty boring. For a ‘movie game,’ though, it’s still among the best.
I highly recommend this FPS if you are looking for something with a ton of style and a unique set of FPS rules to play by.
One of the most amazing classics, I have played a lot of classic games, and this one is one of the best!
The CD version will or will most likely work on newer systems. The Worlds are really neat and the story is really good. I have the CD version and it works PERFECTLY, I highly recommend this game to any sci-fi lover!
Before I start, I didn't know watch the film so I am describing it my experience with the game itself without any affection for the franchising.
Tron 2.0 is a rare FPS where its quirkness comes mostly from the disk-oriented battles that are a major feature of the game itself.
In fact, the gameplay revolves mostly around this, and although there are other weapons, you''ll primarily use the disk, as the programmers probably intended this way.
There's also a rudimental but appreciated upgrade system that ''embellish'' the game a little.
As for the story, it's simple but enjoyable in a way, although it did not caught my fancy.
In the end, I think this game can be quite difficult to rate, for whoever didn't enjoy or knew about the franchise: however if you want an FPS with some features unique to the genre, for better of worse, this one will probably be one to consider buying.
