If you are a fan of the fear games....this game is a love letter to these. Great gunplay cool music, it has everything you want and the bullet time mode is very satisfying. I encountered minor bugs but nothing game breaking so far
What is this, Halo 5? A 5 hour campaign for 30 bucks is unnaceptable. I feel a bit ripped off for the $18 sale price, to be honest. This feels like a tech demo more than an actual game. Sure, it gorgeous. But the depth of content is really lacking. It clearly wants to be like FEAR, but without any of the things that made FEAR great.
Sure, there's horror, but its basically unoriginal SCP and backrooms copycat. Sure, there's a story, but its inpentrable and confusing. Sure, there are side missions, but they're basically just horde mode.
To be honest, the shooting isn't even that great either. You have no ironsights and shooting from the hip is ridiculously innacurate so the only time you're not spraying bullets wildly is when you go into reflexes mode. But you need to kill outside of it to refill it. I guess in theory this rewards agression but in practice it just made me run into oncoming fire like a mindless berserker so I could actually hit something long enough to refill my meter, causing many deaths. I lowered the difficulty, but it just feels stupid to play this way. Its like the game doesn't know if it wants to be a boomer shooter or a slow and tactical shooter like FEAR.
Its also buggy as hell. Floating objects, enemies not taking damage, etc. Stay clear.
Trepang2 is pretty impressive for an indie shooter. It's also a good successor/love-letter to the quite fantastic F.E.A.R. However, it's not as scary and more action-packed than F.E.A.R., but it's still really good. The game is really fun to play when you get used to the mechanics and controls. It's definitely up there with games like Turbo Overkill as one of my top favorite shooters of 2023.
Pros:
- Fun combat and gameplay
- Dual wielding weapons are so satisfying to use
- Great weapons including the shotgun, minigun, and more
- Really good graphics
- Fine enemy types
- Interesting locations/environments
- Good mission variety
- Backrooms reference was cool
- Side missions are a nice change of pace
- Okay voice acting
- Autosaving is a life saver
- Lots of replay value
Cons:
- Bosses are usually really cheap, especially the final boss
- Stamina is very annoying
- A lot of the missions have the tendency to turn into a wave shooter
- (Nitpick, must be the version of Proton I used) The pre-rendered cutscenes don't show up; it's just the color test screen, but at least they're skippable
- The story and dialogue could've been better
- The evil supernatural entities are not as iconic and don't have the same impact as Alma
- $30 is a bit much for a game like this, but at least it's not overpriced disappointing garbage
The game is pretty much F.E.A.R. on steroids. It's really good, but not great since it has some annoying flaws. However, I highly recommend it if you love horror FPS games, F.E.A.R., and shooters that have high octane action. I'm glad we live in a time where it's possible for small developers to make really good successors/love-letters to great, classic games of the past.
This game is wonderful. Fast paced, good looking, brimming with little details to discover, things to unlock, and inexplicably has some great voice acting. Finished it in 9 hours with a few restarts and was entertained throughout. Where the game is not great is that a considerable amount of those 9 hours are wave survival, and if you want to 100% the game the vast majority of it will be wave survival. There's also a few areas in the game where the environments could have been more detailed, as often you'll find doorways blocked by props and the room behind it is completely blank as if it weren't a room people used and lived in that is now inaccessible; it's an unpopulated video game room.
I blame budget for this, and my proposed solution is to give Trepang Studios all the money they need to make more Trepang or whatever else they wish to make because this game was an amazing breath of fresh air and I want more.
On a preferential level I wish the combat favoured milsim a little more, just because I feel jealous when the enemy characters can lean out from corners; but in the optional modifier (cheats) menu you can dang well unlock universal ADS if you want so on replays maybe I'll be less jealous.
Thanks, Trepang, this was great. Looking forward to Trepang2½: The Smell of Fear.
I have this game on Steam but figured I'd review it here as well. This game is phenomenal! It's a high-octane shooter with bullet time mechanics like F.E.A.R. or Max Payne. It has a supernatural SCP style theme which is really cool. Don't expect some wild campaign storytelling, though, the game keeps it fairly simple and cryptic on that front. This is all about the wild shooting and movement. Super fun!
