Description
This game was clearly made with passion. You can see the proof of this almost everywhere. The 2D environments are colorful and enchanting, gameplay feels smooth and polished, not to mention the absolutely huge and very diversified world in which you can spend many hours just exploring. Treasure Adventure Game casts you in the role of a young boy who lands on an island that is a fragment of what was once a continent, destroyed in the war between a demon and a wizard. You accept quests, travel across the oceans, and generally have a bang-up time of being a little boy in a big world, out there looking for treasure and adventure. Your equipment consists of a hat, a parrot, and a boat that appears whenever you touch water. Combine those with the basic platforming abilities like jumping and crawling that you’re familiar with from every platforming game ever, and you’ve got the basics of a phenomenal romp across a huge world filled with treasure, maps, secrets, danger, and triumph.

The music changes with the environments and day-night cycles, enhancing the feel the game is evoking and making you feel immersed in the world as you travel through it. The game has a retro feel, yes, but you really have to see it for yourself to understand what Treasure Adventure Game brings to the table. Since it’s free, of course, there is simply no reason not to!

Treasure Adventure Game was created by Stephen Orlando. He spent over 2 years of his life developing it. When you see the scope and detail in this game, it’s hard to believe that it was created by just one guy. But it was! So if you like it, head over to his website and break that donate button!
  • Huge, open, and highly interactive world to explore and a very interesting story to experience.
  • Very diversified environments with changing weather and NPCs that are not static but living their lives.
  • Beautiful music, composed by Robert Ellis, that changes with the background and creates a very unique and enchanting mood.

Gaming goodness

Treasure Adventure Game reminds me of the good old days in both the good and the bad - however, the former far outshines the latter. The good: + great playability + interesting, detailed and coherent game world... + ...which is full of things to discover + has an atmosphere of its own (which sadly is rare these days) + runs smoothly on older hardware too The not-so-good: - skipping dialogues and the intro should be made possible - you don't need to be THAT faithful to traditions! - I can't stop playing this - (boy am I nitpicking here) while the game does not require a top-of-the-line computer, it could still be better optimised - older GOG gems from the times when processor power was not so abundant run more complex stuff without slowdowns on my meagre laptop from 2006, but TAG is just barely playable in windowed modes. Overall, I can recommend TAG to anyone - ignore the thirteen-year-old know-it-alls who think this is a substandard PS3 shooter, and take a trip to a wonderful faery tale world!

Don't Pass This By

I know people don't spend a lot of time reading these reviews so if you read nothing else, read this: Treasure Adventure Game isn't just one of the best free games available today, it's one of the best games available period. "Metroidvania" games, as they're known colloquially, are a dime a dozen these days. Even freebies like Cave Story are readily available. What Treasure Adventure Game does differently is truly allows you free reign. After about an hour into the game, you can go anywhere across the entire world. While it's not the largest game world out there, it's still quite large and is packed with exciting opportunities. The guided section in the first hour or so is just enough to give you a wonderful introduction to the game and allows you to see several of the areas that you will be able to reach later on in the game. There are plenty of items to collect throughout the game world and each allows you significant advances in where the player can go. For example, Boots allows the character to jump higher and therefore access new areas. Some aren't as cliche as that, however, such as adding a cannon to the boat which lets you shoot down switches and fight enemies on the high seas. Aside from searching for power-ups, your goal in the game is find 12 treasures scattered across the world. These would be nearly impossible to discover if not for maps similarly lost. The maps are usually in fairly obvious locations although they aren't all easy to get to. The maps then lead to secret locations for each of the 12 treasures. There were times I felt aimless but they were short and usually accompanied with an "ah-ha" moment that felt satisfying and rewarding. The dungeons are often large but manageable. They never felt so huge that I felt lost but they also weren't over too quickly either. The bosses are also appropriately epic and a lot of fun to fight. Not all of them are classic but all are fun and well worth the playthrough. The plot isn't the greatest you'll ever experience but for a free, indie game, it will probably surprise you. The story has twists and turns, some you'll see coming and some you may not. Considering how great the rest of the game is, the ending is a bit of a letdown with a bizarre and out-of-place final battle with a rather anti-climactic ending that seems to lose faith in the quality of the game. Still, by this point, you're probably already feeling like the game was well worth the price of entry and some may find the ending amusing or even exciting. Overall, Treasure Adventure Game is a wonderful game, made only better by the fact that it's free. Do yourself a favor and don't assume that just because it's free means it's not worth any cost.

Crashing

I dunno, I couldn't get the Setup to stick, so no controller or resolution settings worked. Game crashed a few times during the intro.

Just some fun but not long

The world, story, and difficulty might be small but it's a good nod to old games. As you progress through you'll pick up upgrades for your boat and work through some puzzles. Probably recommend for young kids but I wouldn't mind a sequel that's bigger and more difficult.

Very nice for a free game

It's really great to see that indie games are enjoying so much success, especially games like Cave Story and this one, both free games, and both very well done. TAG is platform jumping game with a lot of exploration involved; you are free to explore the world around you, and you are expected where to go next. Sometimes it can get confusing, and I looked in a walkthrough now and then. Apart from that, it's a pretty easy game compared to old school platformers like Super Mario Bros. or Metroid. The finest thing about TAG is the compelling and funny story, that easily competes with much more advanced games on the market. I had a great time playing the game, and was intrigued by the original mood and story. If you're into retro gaming, you're bound to love this, everyone else should give it a try too.
