I have completed this game 100% but still keep returning. I don't pretend it's flawless, but the tone really struck me, the world felt immersive, and the ending haunts me still. My favorite from Supergiant, and one of my favorite in both the action-platformer and cyberpunk categories. Well worth picking up.
So I will divide this review into two sections- What I liked, and what I disliked.
Pretty art design, cool combat system, kinda lacking voice acting, but even the little that it has is done good. I wish the main story was a little bit bigger and for it to have few more cool boss encounters. The most enemies encounters seem to be always clustered, and you sometimes bumп from one to another. Which is kinda annoying considering that the enemies are mostly the same but with some minior buffs like shields, crowd control attacks etc. The moments when you see a new enemy however are realy fun. I personaly am not a fan how the game has those "checkpoints" where you can upgrade and re-arrange your abilities WAAAY too often. It removes the challange, you simply *safe, fight few mobs, run 5 metres and there you have it, another *checkpoint. Nevertheless the game is beautiful and deserves a try аlso the ending is awesome.
I had the chance to play this game just because a friend shared it with me . I can see that it is sold for 19 Euros. In my opinion the game is not worth this price, perhaps more like 8-10 Euro TOPS. Just because it will get you playing around 15-16 hours if you want to see everything. But right now it is on 80% discount so I am going to recommend it to you.
No doubt it's a good game, great combat system, superb art design and story backgrounds. But it's difficult to give a rating to it.
As a player, I will give it 5 star, because I was immersed during the whole game playing experience. But as a game designer, the rating may be reconsidered as it's a pity to notice that the game play still has a lot of potential contents and machanisms which can make this game better.
I'm not mean to say this game looks incomplete in game contents. But it's really strange for players when they notice some puzzles in the beginning of games, but head over ears in battles and stories in the remaining times.
After all, I still give a 5 star. I cannot be too strict for a small-budget game, especially released in 2014.
GOG ate my review for some reason, so I'll keep this brief this time.
-Gorgeous art
-Phenomenal soundtrack (and great singer)
-Cool, strategic combat with optional pause and play and an AMAZING amount of abilities, combos and passives.
-Abilities can be used in three different ways and can be combined together to make hybrid ones to your liking.
-Great voice acting narrates your every move, making everything you do feel like they have an impact.
-Story and backround lore is interesting and makes you want to search for more.
-Game rewards you for experimenting with abilities with lore.
-Game is challenging on its own, but is also very flexible. Player can add optional 'limiters' to make combat even more challenging.
-Game is pretty short but is meant to be played more than once to experience everything.
The gist: The game is absolutely beautiful, and is pretty much a must if you enjoyed Bastion.
Finally finished it. It's great. The story and the mechanics both work wonderfully. My only complaint would be that during the middle of the game, the fights can get a bit too hectic since your options of Functions (spells) out of Turn are a bit too limited.
It also has a great NewGame+ mode.
