Atmospheric sci-fi rpg

I first need to say this, if you liked Bastion you would love Transistor. I played Bastion a couple of years ago and I thought it was brilliant. The only downsides were in my opinion the gameplay itself and the story. The combat felt out of date, and I forced myself through it because of the great atmosphere. The same with the story, it was not really believable that a little kid would save the world. But then again, the atmosphere was amazing and the thing that made Bastion one of my top gaming experiences. Fast forward a couple of years to Transistor, take Bastion but take away all the bad stuff from it and you have Transistor. Supergiant games have thought up an interesting story and put in a very cool combat system, which is easy to learn but takes time to master. A lot of strategy is involved in the combat and to combine all of the different functions (moves) and see what happens was one of the games strong points. The atmosphere and music are top notch and the story is interesting. You feel for the characters, Red the heroine and also the talking sword. Who was he ? Can we save him ? Can we get our voice back ? What is happening in the city ? A lot of questions pop ups the first ten minutes and I feel that they were all explained around 6 hours later. The story is brought to the gamer mainly by the swords voice, with some occasional reading on terminals. If you want to dwell deeper into the lore you can read about the different functions and who they were when they were alive. But to do so, you need to equip them in battle. A smart thing from the developers, leading to more experimentation of the different functions. Great graphics, great story, great music, great atmosphere, great combat. Well, this is one of the best games I have played.

Awesome game !

The art style is beautiful and the color palette very fitting with the theme. The music is excellent, superb, I don't know what else to say about it! The gameplay and game mechanics are a little weird at first like some mix of turn based gameplay but in real time but it has a freeze time "planner" function that recharges in realtime..., its not as good as the rest parts of the game but it does its job good enough and the combinations you can do with your abilities gives you some variety in how to play although there are some combinations that are a lot stronger than anything else. All those parts fit together nicely and the result in an awesome game, I just wanted more in my opinion is short and the replayability is not that good. For those that care about the games performance in Linux, I played it in Manjaro(4.14.27-1-MANJARO) with the latest Mesa drivers available on the Manjaro's repos and run buttery smooth, it is not a demanding game but still manages to have very beautiful visuals :) [Hardware: AMD PhenomX4 965, R9 270x, RAM 8GB].

Stunning Tone and Immersion

I have completed this game 100% but still keep returning. I don't pretend it's flawless, but the tone really struck me, the world felt immersive, and the ending haunts me still. My favorite from Supergiant, and one of my favorite in both the action-platformer and cyberpunk categories. Well worth picking up.

Great game, but it still has some flaws

So I will divide this review into two sections- What I liked, and what I disliked. Pretty art design, cool combat system, kinda lacking voice acting, but even the little that it has is done good. I wish the main story was a little bit bigger and for it to have few more cool boss encounters. The most enemies encounters seem to be always clustered, and you sometimes bumп from one to another. Which is kinda annoying considering that the enemies are mostly the same but with some minior buffs like shields, crowd control attacks etc. The moments when you see a new enemy however are realy fun. I personaly am not a fan how the game has those "checkpoints" where you can upgrade and re-arrange your abilities WAAAY too often. It removes the challange, you simply *safe, fight few mobs, run 5 metres and there you have it, another *checkpoint. Nevertheless the game is beautiful and deserves a try аlso the ending is awesome. I had the chance to play this game just because a friend shared it with me . I can see that it is sold for 19 Euros. In my opinion the game is not worth this price, perhaps more like 8-10 Euro TOPS. Just because it will get you playing around 15-16 hours if you want to see everything. But right now it is on 80% discount so I am going to recommend it to you.

Good game but need improvement

No doubt it's a good game, great combat system, superb art design and story backgrounds. But it's difficult to give a rating to it. As a player, I will give it 5 star, because I was immersed during the whole game playing experience. But as a game designer, the rating may be reconsidered as it's a pity to notice that the game play still has a lot of potential contents and machanisms which can make this game better. I'm not mean to say this game looks incomplete in game contents. But it's really strange for players when they notice some puzzles in the beginning of games, but head over ears in battles and stories in the remaining times. After all, I still give a 5 star. I cannot be too strict for a small-budget game, especially released in 2014.
