While investigating the disappearance of twin girls at Winterlake, something terrible happens to Caroline Walker. Waking in the dead of night, naked and hooked up to some kind of outdated medical equipment in a bathtub, Caroline must fight for her life as she explores the halls of the abandoned mansion.
A Nod to the Classics
Tormented Souls draws inspiration from classic survival horror like From Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Alone in the Dark. A modern take on the fixed-perspective action-adventure game, Tormented Souls offers a modernised control scheme and dynamic camera combined with classic gameplay.
Deadly Combat
Dark forces and unspeakable horrors will do everything in their power to stop Caroline getting to the truth. Use anything and everything that you can find to fight back against evils lurking in the darkness.
Keep Your Wits About You
You'll need much more than a steady aim and sharp reflexes to make it out alive. Search the environment for anything you can use to your advantage. Combine items to solve twisted puzzles and use every resource available to explore the secrets of the mansion and its grounds.
Fiendish Puzzles
Scavenge essential resources and tools, decipher clues from long-forgotten journals, and combine it all to solve fiendish puzzles and get to the bottom of the mansion's sordid history.
Another Dimension
Nothing is quite as it seems at Winterlake. Mirrors provide a path to an alternate reality and another place in time. By crossing these shimmering gateways, Caroline can manipulate the very fabric of reality in surprising ways.
You Are Not Alone In the Dark
The mansion may seem abandoned, but as Caroline investigates its secrets, dark forces and unspeakable horrors will do everything in their power to stop her getting to the truth. Be sure to be alert at all times, and use anything you can find to fight off the encroaching terrors of Winterlake. Just remember: gaze into the darkness, and it also gazes into you...
Can Caroline Walker discover the truth and escape with her life?

You could say Tormented Souls is pastiche. Yeah. I guess it’s pastiche, but that idea has some negative connotations in my mind because “pastiche” is the wet newspaper of words. I hope you feel just as negative about it because if you don’t then I’m going to need to write a new introduction. I’m not going to write a new introduction. There’s nothing negative here, just some adjustments you need to make.
Tormented Souls is a great survival horror game, and I’m not just saying that because the hobby I’ve been passionate about since childhood has been dismantled by sceptic speculators over the last fifteen years. Tormented Souls is such excellent pastiche of the fifth and six generation survival horror genre that, if it wasn’t lacquered in the unity engine, you wouldn’t be able to tell it was released recently. It even has the same shortfalls. Dual Effect were so thorough in their imitation that they didn’t just recreate the mistakes of the genre, they seemingly recreated them by accident.
You just don’t see that kind of earnestness anymore.
I think this had some of the best survival horror puzzles of all time outside of a single music puzzle. The combat isn't special, but it does a great job of giving you just enough resources to get through everyone. Overall, really solid.
I tried this game three times now. The biggest problem of the game is in my opinion that it does not allow to save more often. Your saves are very limited and if you die you have to replay large portions (up to ~20 minutes playtime). This is especially bad combined with how buggy the game is, which makes you die even though you did everything right.
So here are my three runs:
First run I just died in an instant death trap, there is NO save point in the game at this point at all, so I had to restart the game from the beginning. Even though many cutscenes are skippable, there is still a lot of interaction you need to do before the game really starts. Very annoying.
On my second run I reached the first save point and got to the first enemies. Could defeat some but again, for a long time no save point. I messed up and died (my mistake I admit, no criticism here).
Third run I thought well okay now that I know where the enemies are, I can do this. And I did really well, I almost managed to reach the save point without even taking any damage, but there are two enemies guarding the save room and after defeating the first enemy and shooting the second enemy to the ground, suddenly I could not finish off the second enemy anymore, the crowbar wouldn't connect and the nail gun behaved as if there was no enemy left in the room (it usually auto-aims). The enemy could just kill me from full heath without me being able to do anything.
Might give the game another try if the developer fixes this issue.
I will say this game is definitely NOT for Silent Hill lovers, as other reviews claim. Silent Hill has pretty frequent save points and you can save however often you want and you're also not limited with inventory and SH tends to give tons of resources. Tormented Souls also has no difficulty selection at all. I would say it's more for people who like Resident Evil.
